"Build in 14 days" programs too good to be true?

Rumor has it that some of them may treat the spirit of the rules in an... elastic... manner. The rules say you have to do 51% and some of the TWTT programs may interpret this as, "He built a wing rib so that drawing has been owner built" **CHECKMARK**. In reality there may be a couple hired...

    Stol Aircraft

CH 701 and now the CH 750 from Zenith are LSA compliant STOL aircraft. Bob Barrows of Bearhawk fame is (slowly) working on an LSA compliant plane that looks a lot like a reincarnation of the Bearhawk Patrol.

    Good plane for Alaska flying?

You might be able to squeeze a Bearhawk in under that price but you'll be fabricating everything yourself and rebuilding an old engine, using a handheld radio, etc. Rumor on the BH list is that someone managed to build one for $15,000. That guy must be a master scrounger. Most people seem to...

    Header tanks scare me...

Oh, I thought that's what he wanted. I was pretty tired when I read the forum that day, thanks for setting it straight.

    Header tanks scare me...

Sonex LLC uses this sort of tank. If theirs won't work for your project they may be able to tell you where to get one that will.

    Header tanks scare me...

BTW, the autopsy performed on the pilot in the crash originating this thread determined that cause of death was multiple blunt force trauma. Small blessings but at least the fire didn't kill him (my least preferred method of my own demise). So the theory of "if it ruptures the tank you've got...

Where are the fast high wing LSA kits?

From what I understand, E-LSA was intended to bring all the fat ultralights into compliance. Now you would have to build a kit that is also offered as an S-LSA aircraft *AND* build it exactly to the designers' specs, as laid out on the plans. This includes instrument package and layout. NO...

    Sonex Builder's Workshop Review

I have seen Dennis Burton's Sonex and he polished the skins before he assembled. The difference really shows near the rivets.

    CH 750 WOW!!!

One of the best things about the ch7XX series is that they are very survivable. There are lots of stories in the NTSB database of people flying them into things that really shouldn't be flown into, like trees. Seems most of the people exit the aircraft themselves after crashing.

    Sonex Builder's Workshop Review

Yay! Thanks for the write-up! re: Riveting a Sonex: Don't worry about it. Anyone can do pull rivets, it's not like you're banging together an RV or a Mustang with blind rivets. Be sure to check into the flush rivet option before you get too far into making parts. I think the Sonex looks...

    Flight training in an experimental

Well there's certainly no regulation that says a CFI has to charge for their services. If you paid for everything then I can't see anything the FAA would have to say about it. The "half costs" were people trying to figure out where the FAA would split the hairs should anyone ever be...

    Flight training in an experimental

I'm a 3 year dreamer now. No certificate. I looked into this and the consensus is yes, you are allowed to teach people for free. From what I understand you can "split costs" which means that since you are both logging hours you'd better split it down the middle to be perfectly legal. You...
