    They built lots of planes out of Ash prior to finding Sitka. Sitka is just easier to find A/C lumber then Ash. Meaning maybe 1 in 10 meet mil spec whereas 1 in 200 meet it with Ash.     Depending on your plane, the weight penalty is 13-17 pounds, but you gain 4x the strength. Lots of people reduce the members to the same strength. Ash is the strongest wood weight to the strength of all the common A/C woods.
