    Sandlin Gliders: Builds, mods, flights

Nothing a little blue sharpie can’t touch up! I like your seat, did you make it? How much does it weigh?

    Sandlin Gliders: Builds, mods, flights

Thanks for posting these. I didn’t notice all the 5 point star cutouts before. That’s a nice touch, I presume those are SCS’s work? Is that blue an anodized layer? The airplane is looking really nice! Re: gas tank location, is the idea of making it flush with the wing surface purely...

Will there be a western soaring workshop in 2024?

I hope you all like Winwoods.

    Sandlin Gliders: Builds, mods, flights

Layup of rudder pedals, tried using some peel ply this time. I think they would have turned out smoother with a single sheet of woven cloth rather than multiple overlapping tapes, but the goat is a utilitarian glider. I plan on adding some filler, sanding, and painting these to protect from UV...

Will there be a western soaring workshop in 2024?

Bille That’s awesome that you’ve known Floyd for that long. I know that Mike changed the design of the rudder pedals for the goat 2 versus the goat 1 which I believe is what Floyd flies. (Not sure how much he’s modified it from Mike’s drawings though.) Goat 1 had flattened tubes as the main...

Will there be a western soaring workshop in 2024?

Looking forward to meeting some like-minded individuals with experience to share and hopefully catch some things that need catching prior to flight. these would be the glider’s first tows as my training plan is focused on training hill runs and trimming flight sled runs. I will know more about...

    Reviving Brightstar Millenium

If we are fine with an open cockpit, and somewhat good glide performance, and we don’t want to do structural composites, what if we built a millenium-like glider but using Mike Sandlin’s design bench? This means use of pre-manufactured seamless hot drawn aluminum tubes as spars (1 fwd as the...

Will there be a western soaring workshop in 2024?

I am just about done with the nose section of the glider and have the tubes shipping from back order at Spruce for the wings at the end of April, so as long as my slight modifications to the wing design don’t prove to be a massive delay, and if I can apply my model airplane covering skills to...

What brand is that rotary cutter? I had to buy my Olfa pinking blade as an extra. But Olfa makes some of the finest Japanese blades in my opinion.

    Boeing - Design Issues...

A metastatic McDonnelloma tumor destroyed the Douglas host, and is now just about done bleeding the Big Blue organ dry. Without radical gene therapy the patient has a poor prognosis. Chemo and radiation won’t be enough to eradicate the cancer.

Load Test Failure Main Wing Aluminum Dragon

Did you do all that design on your phone? I think I’d have carpal tunnel claws after even trying something like that. Design looks great in OnShape. Is there supposed to be a web at the inboard end where the diagonals stop?

    Sandlin Gliders: Builds, mods, flights

Spacers came in, I think they look pretty nice. Control stick has a nice solid feel to it. couple of wet layup best practices I’ve noticed : get all your dry goods cut to length ahead of time and stages where you can get them with sticky gloves on. Prep everything beforehand and you can save...

    Sandlin Gliders: Builds, mods, flights

Looks like a nice setup. I wish I had that much space. Do you flatten the tips of the ribs before or after bending the airfoil contour? I assume after?

Cheapest / least expensive plane to build

I thought I remembered reading about a couple of accidents with the WH where elevator authority was marginal or lost due to airframe flexing, am I remembering correctly? If I am, has the WH community completed a workaround fix or is it a “don’t dive the airplane” fix? I know there’s a following...

    Sandlin Gliders: Builds, mods, flights

That is exactly it. I’ve gotten a lot of use out of this red oak 3/4” dowel. You may remember it from such films as “Nose Truss Assembly Jig” and “Sanding Stick”. :)

    Sandlin Gliders: Builds, mods, flights

Fun fact: I used some of my scrapped elevator spar tube to make the rudder pedal tubes. There is some more of it in the nose truss structure.

    Sandlin Gliders: Builds, mods, flights

Starting on the rudder pedals. These are two .750 tubes each, with AN42B eyebolts thru doubled brackets and foam and glass sandwich body. The long .750 brackets get two bends to catch the outside edge of the foot on the outboard side and attach the rudder control line (sheet?) on the inboard side.

    Sandlin Gliders: Builds, mods, flights

@SlowFlyingObject thanks again for the PIREP (BUILREP?) on the spacer supplier. PS I intended this thread to be a place for Sandlin builds, so feel free to post more progress here on your nice looking Bloop any time! I think you’re still ahead of me but we should be encountering some of the...
