60 Years of Popular Mechanics saved from the dump

This is almost as much fun and does not take as much shelf space. You can do the same with Popular Science. https://books.google.com/books/about/Popular_Mechanics.html?id=49gDAAAAMBAJ

    Contra rotating propellers

Checking the loop feature of you tube, when copy and pasted. Didn't work :( and I can't delete.

    Real or doctored photo?

I think this observation does merit more consideration. I had looked at the fin? on the underside of the plane and don't see anything other than a skid plate, but maybe it is something else.

    Real or doctored photo?

My point of thought was based on the possibility that he may have been at that (or somewhere close) height of 1 meter over the water and a pull back on the control lever would force the tail onto the water, where it would act like a water ski displacing the large mass of water on each side. I...

    Real or doctored photo?

Thanks, everyone that took time to post, and especially "Ron Wanttaja" for his excellent illustrations, this is the line that lets me know it's time to let this thread die its slow death. :) even though I read in the story somewhere, a height of 1 meter (or about 3 feet) above the water "Ground...

    Real or doctored photo?

I pretty much believe the picture is fake, hence the thread title, but my ADD/OCD brain can see that much water being affected by a 5 Ton plane moving at 400+ miles per hour and a 7,000 Lb thrust blowing out the tail cone, but only if the tail made momentary contact with the surface. I have...

    Real or doctored photo?

So after watching a small race plane skim the water at a couple of hundred miles per hour (or less) I looked up some specs on a Mig17 along with a screenshot. General characteristics Crew: 1 Length: 11.264 m (36 ft 11 in) Wingspan: 9.628 m (31 ft 7 in) Height: 3.8 m (12 ft 6 in) Wing area...

    Real or doctored photo?

I have spent a little time watching this video, using a 27" monitor and full screen, then setting you-tube at 1/4 speed, the visual of how much water is kicked up at the tail wheel and what tore off the main wheel fairing has me really giving thought to what might have happened with the mig17 jet.

    Real or doctored photo?

Well, I have been pretty well convinced the photo is dramatically enhanced, but I still think the disturbance of the water is more significant than just a plane flying over open water. A jet at 700 MPH moves a rather strong "shock collar" or "pressure cone" as it flys along and going into that...

    Real or doctored photo?

I'm for sure math-challenged, but I think there is more at play here, more than the power of the engine, but rather the speed and mass of the plane and the effect to the air it is moving through. ( I tend to think the kinetic energy involved, far exceeds the power of the engine) Also, you might...

    Real or doctored photo?

Because the plane is much closer to the camera it would appear to be larger, so I don't see a problem. Now in relation to the short video of the Blue Angel, he is much higher above the water and in open space, The Russian Mig is flying into an enclosed space (all three sides and the water...

    Real or doctored photo?

Sorry, but I'm not comprehending your words, what are you saying?
  13. R

    Real or doctored photo?

I did see one article that implied the Russian Pilot was 1 meter above the water, so I did a screen shot of the Blue Angel pilot and would guess he is about 30 meters above the water and see the clear and obvious effect on the water, how much difference in energy transfer to the surface.

    Real or doctored photo?

So I guess the question in my mind, is will a plane displace that much energy in the wake of its flight path? Or is it an artist impression of a much less energetic event?

    Real or doctored photo?

That top picture looks like Burlington Vermont runway and if it is, the 767 could not have wheels up that high in such a short run, but then camera angle can be a deceiving thing.

    Real or doctored photo?

I felt it might have a bit of truth because of a few pictures like this below. The angle coming out from under the bridge seems a bit steep when considering how close to the bridge he still is. (talking about the OP picture) Sounds like everyone is in agreement and if so, this has been...

    Real or doctored photo?

I came across this and personally think it's not fake, I would like to see what some real jet pilots have to say before I make some more crackpot comments about regenerating electric power while flying. :wonder: Comments from anyone is OK...

    Recycling Lead acid Batteries

I think between your link and this one, I'm just about on track, just need to work out temperature and scale. Thanks http://www.prospectorsparadise.com/basement-chemistry/assaying-and-smelting/

    Recycling Lead acid Batteries

Sad for me to say, I am one, that when in a public or group situation and called upon to answer a question that I know very well the correct answer, will completely have a brain freeze where the words just cannot come to mind. That's as close to an example of a "brain quit" as I can think of...

New design... the “Eye Roll” One

And now we have another "out of the box engineer" thrashed and trashed, by the very people that are wishing and hoping for better batteries and more advanced improvements for the planes they aspire to.
