    Rear Seat Pilot Taildraggers

I want to buy a tandem back-seat-pilot taildragger to build time in before I finish my Skybolt. Besides a J-3 Cub, what else is out there that would inexpensively help get me get ready for the 'Bolt? Thanks, Al

    P-40B Tomahawk

Sonex293: I'm sorry I wasn't clear. I was referring to the Loehle P-40 as a 75% scale replica. The v-12 Allison was a tip off that John's P-40 is the real thing.

How did you learn to fly?

I fly out of Kemper Aviation in Lantana, FL. That's where the rates are $67/hr for a C-150 and $23/hr for the instructor. Depending on fuel cost fluctuations there may be a surcharge. Right now it is $11/hr. They do have a LARGE number of foreign students who they put up in dormitories at...

How did you learn to fly?

I completed my flight training in 1974 out of our little airport that only had 1 flight instructor at the time. He used his own Cherokee 140 for flight training. My advice is to find the cheapest flight school you can with old Cessnas to keep the costs down. In my area, flight training for a...

    Steel Tube Construction DVD

I cut my new tungstens in half with the grinder, giving me 20 points (I use a short back cap). Chucking them in my cordless drill at slow speed and grinding on a dedicated fine grit wheel works great for me. Al

    Help on Brackets

Right, sorry about that. All the controls including rudder pedals, torque tube, reverser, walking beam, throttle quadrants, elevator trim lever, and seat pans, and rudder cable fairleads I have already installed. But I know there must be a lot more that I don't have on my list. Thanks.

    Okay, new discussion: welding

For a TIG, you want to go with a big name like Miller or Lincoln for reliability and service. I doubt if the HF TIG will last through the whole fuselage before burning out. Also, if you plan to weld aluminum, the inverter type TIGs won't do it, you need DC- output for steel and AC output for...

    Help on Brackets

So before I start welding on my Skybolt belly and side formers, I want to weld in all the brackets on the inside of the fuselage before these formers get in the way. So I'm making a list and need some help. Please let me know what I've forgotten. 1. ELT, antenna and starter solenoid brackets...

    Converting a Wood Bandsaw

Before you spend a lot of money converting a wood bandsaw, check out Harbor Freight. I bought their $149 metal cutting bandsaw and cut all my steel fittings on it. Works great.

    Weld or braze?

"Always avoid brazing 4130 steel. The reason to not braze chromemoly is that this steel has a definite grain structure that actually opens up at medium red brazing temperatures. When brazing alloy is melted onto the steel surface, it flows easily into the many small cracks and crevices in the...

    Aerocomp Aircraft

Does anyone know anything about these kits? They have a nice looking high wing 6 seater with good performance. Possible cross-country project after I finish my Skybolt.

    Differential Ailerons

On our R/C models we often use aileron differential to eliminate the adverse yaw and make rolls perfectly axial. We can dial in differential using our computerized transmitters. Depending on the type of plane, it usually takes between 10-20% differential to eliminate the adverse yaw. This...

    Weld or braze?

I have TIG welded a complete Skybolt fuselage, landing gear, etc. From what my welding instructor told me (way back), is that 4130 should NEVER be brazed. Something about the braze getting into the grain of the steel and making it brittle.
