Hummel UltraCruiser - a good idea as a first project?

that's the thing I believe gets overlooked the most: using modern materials. I don't know if a foam seat would weigh a lot less than a metal one but i think it deserves consideration. and definitely the engine. there has been so much innovation. i'm sure there is a good engine that has the...

Hummel UltraCruiser - a good idea as a first project?

interesting point. so, you're landing on gravel braches (with requisite driftwood and the odd boulder) in an UltraCruiser?

Hummel UltraCruiser - a good idea as a first project?

Speaking of longer gear legs. Since the UC has the Wings rather low to the ground, I was wondering also about possibly changing the gear height to give the wings some extra clearance. Imagine some 28” bush wheels on it, haha. I think it would be badass. But realistic? CG might need some...

Hummel UltraCruiser - a good idea as a first project?

That’s what I’m wondering. The 1/2 VW at 37hp is 85lb Could an F33 at 28hp produce enough power? Literature suggests that, yes, it could. It’s about 35lb 😮 50lb savings sounds good to me. Didn’t see any info on the Hummel site about the actual weight of the basic airframe sans engine.

Hummel UltraCruiser - a good idea as a first project?

I’m wondering if there is any way to make this bird stay under 254 lb but still get a canopy going. Between minimizing avionics, picking a light engine, and some other shenanigans like making the canopy from thinner acrylic, I believe it ought to be feasible to pull it off. Is there anyone...

Why not use bladders in fuel tanks?

I have this weird idea that I got while drinking from a water bladder out in the wilderness. Why not install a bladder inside the fuel tank so that there is less likelihood of air in the gasoline tank? Secondary question I was wondering is about ferry tanks. Why not have a bladder as a...

Why don't bush planes have head rests?

Always wondered when looking at the cubs and the vans and the zeniths, Highlanders etc... I never see them with seats that have head rests. Why?

Help a newbie understand IFR concepts

I'm getting a little confused. On one hand I used to think experimental GA means you don't need certified avionics, but then I'm reading that if you're doing IFR, you'll have to get certified avionics, which are HIDEOUSLY EXPENSIVE. I consider myself about 5 years away from seriously going...

Anyone near Juno, AL in middle of July and wants to fly?

I'm from CA but in AL in July on a cruise. Somehow the idea of paying some commercial outfit to fly around for 45 minutes doesn't sound that interesting. I'd so much rather talk shop and geek out on homebuilt plane stuff. So I figure why not ask around these parts and see if there might be...

    hmm. D motor f 39 or ULpower 360iS ? Cub style 2-seater (highlander)

Perhaps I'm just too inexperienced, but I worry a lot more about potential carburetor ice causing problems. If I had to choose between not getting off the ground in a place I chose to land in, and having to land some sketchy spot I don't want to go to in the first place.... I'd choose the...

    hmm. D motor f 39 or ULpower 360iS ? Cub style 2-seater (highlander)

Both same price range. I like the simplicity of the d motor. A bit worried about the company being smaller. ULpower looks like they're becoming another Rotax but the engines look pretty complex. I just can't make up my mind. I'm not an engine nut. But want to be sure that I can fix...

What's the not so obvious stuff you worry about when flying in very low temperatures

Re: What's the not so obvious stuff you worry about when flying in very low temperatu Aw man. My previous post on engine got lost. Grrrrrr. Technology... Sigh. I'll try rewriting a short version Sounds like draining oil while still warm and then separately "cooking" it warm again before...

What's the not so obvious stuff you worry about when flying in very low temperatures

Re: What's the not so obvious stuff you worry about when flying in very low temperatu Re: cold weather comfort since many posts were about it... Wanted to offer my $0.02 Problem is body constantly releases water which then condensates in the clothes regardless of fabric. Depending on temp...

Re: What's the not so obvious stuff you worry about when flying in very low temperatu Thanks all for these interesting posts! I'm collecting stuff I didn't think of: Closing the radiator. Interesting. Makes sense. How does one effectively preheat the oil if you don't have a hanger to plug...

What's the not so obvious stuff you worry about when flying in very low temperatures

So you checked your liquids and the airframe and propeller are perfectly clean. And it's minus 10 degrees as you're getting ready to go, with a nice brisk 10 knot wind... I was wondering if anyone would care to share some not too obvious concerns and issues you faced when flying a plane in...
