    Wing/fuselage covers for summer

Wondering if anyone has experience with leaving fabric plane out in the summer with wing/fusleage covers?( hangar in winter) Feels like this is helpful, but still will degrade some of the fabric rapidly as not everything can be covered. Any experience would be appreciated.

    Film over fabric

Have used windsurfing and traditional sails that were laminated with something like Tedlar or Mylar in the past. I wonder if after getting Dacron tight on wings, why a white Tedlar film could not be bonded over the top of the Dacron. UV protection, slick finish, no painting, no sanding , easy to...

Revisting thicker skins for laminar flow

Yes, very helpful, the consensus is composites are superior( and true for the most part), but factory composite sailplane planes rarely meet the standard for laminar flow without some work. These factories have years of experience and struggle with this standard. What factual data can be found...

Revisting thicker skins for laminar flow

.004 "waviness" over 2 inches was the gold standard in the flight tests. .006 appears to be a common number for fiberglass planes. A few were in the .004 range, but almost all regardless of construction method needed work to achieve .004.

Revisting thicker skins for laminar flow

Understanding laminar flow is not the issue, getting it is the issue. What I was looking for was the best-documented method for getting close to laminar flow if aluminum was used. Aside from snide opinions, the best data I could find was from Dick Johnson's sailplane tests. He always noted the...

    Direct Drive Honda/B&S limits

Spinner diameter is already 17 inches. Had not considered flipping the engine. Lots of good points to consider.

    Direct Drive Honda/B&S limits

Thank you for the offer, just emailed Ace to try and get one made to keep the engine centered due the low shaft position.

    Direct Drive Honda/B&S limits

Excellent point as I would prefer direct drive, but redrive may allow a larger prop with a little less risk. Redrive also allow engine position to be more centered.

    Direct Drive Honda/B&S limits

Armilite was right, redrive is needed even with the lightest props. MOI for the flywheel was almost identical to the tiny and lightweight props on the FES system. So even the smallest props are likely too much for the engines "as is".

Revisting thicker skins for laminar flow

Is it fair to say: A preformed aluminum wing skin greater than .05 thickness with an underlying structure that keeps the wing from deforming under load is the preferred approach to this issue?

Revisting thicker skins for laminar flow

Familiar with HP-18, but not the SX-300, will check it out. Any other examples or methods?

Revisting thicker skins for laminar flow

Found an older post on this subject, hence the subject line Question: Are laminar flow wings/fuselage always impossible with aluminum construction regardless of construction methods? Does no construction method exist to solve this issue? Prebent/molded thicker wing skins, aluminum over foam or...
