    Yamaha-Powered STOL Highlander

Do you know which model was he running? Been doing a bit more research and am leaning towards the non turbo 4cyl to keep things simple.

    Yamaha-Powered STOL Highlander

Anybody have any info on how much flight time has been accumulated on these engines and how the reliability has been?

Operate from 450 feet of grass?

If I clear right to the property line I get another 100 feet before hitting trees that aren't mine. If 450' isn't practical I'm guessing 550 still doesn't leave much safety margin.

Operate from 450 feet of grass?

If you are going to add collective control to a gyro why not just add a tail rotor and have and helicopter? Edit: now you got me thinking. What about kaman style servo flaps, used to twist the blade to a zero/low lift state. Might be able to make it simpler than a conventional swash plate.

Operate from 450 feet of grass?

How about a gyro, strapped down to a base, a splined shaft (like a PTO shaft) connects the base to the rotor and an external engine drives the rotor above flight rpm, the straps keeping it on the ground. Apply full power, release the straps and hopefully jump high enough to reach flying speed...

Operate from 450 feet of grass?

The planned spot was over 800 feet when I got the idea I could put a runway there, it unfortunatly shrunk to 600 when I actually measured it, take out the trees at the ends and a bit for error and I'm left with 450. I knew 800 would work, I had a feeling 450 would be really borderline. An R22...

Operate from 450 feet of grass?

Fair enough, if it isn't practical in a conventional plane, what about two seat ultralight? Gyro with pre rotator? It would be easy for any helicopter, but I'm trying to avoid the complexity and cost.

Operate from 450 feet of grass?

To clarify 350 lbs useful load consisting of a skinny pilot, small passenger and enough fuel for an hour or so with reserve.

Operate from 450 feet of grass?

This the real issue. The cruise speed requirement is flexible, maybe even the enclosed cabin as long as it has a decent windscreen. The runway is what it is, and the budget doesn't allow for big horsepower, so i guess im searching for something very light with a big wing.

Operate from 450 feet of grass?

Thanks for the reply, do you happen to know what kind of ground roll the storch would have on short grass? If it can be climbing at the claimed 1200fpm within 250 feet it should be able to clear the trees fine. Seems to hit all of the other requirements pretty well.

Operate from 450 feet of grass?

Wondering what the options are for operating safely from a short grass strip. I have 450 feet of flat ground to work with, aligned with the prevailing winds for the area. On each end I have about 50 feet of trees, approx 30-40 feet high. I'm ok with trimming the tops down to 20' or cutting...

Impractical fun planes you would build if you had the time and money?

I was hoping we could keep to aircraft you actually could build in a normal life span with a normal shop if you had the free time and the funds, but being HBA everything seems to slide deep into the land of fantasy.

Impractical fun planes you would build if you had the time and money?

Sounds fun.... Care to elaborate a little more? Looks like it could be a hand full to fly, another reason why it goes in the impractical category.

Impractical fun planes you would build if you had the time and money?

Seeing as I don't have the time with work to even build one plane, when I finally get the time to start I feel I need to pick something that can do as many missions as possible. If I had the time to build 3 or 4 planes I would love to build a knight twister. It would serve no purpose other than...

    ICeU SPECTRES Kickstarter project

I'll take one of those 260hp/160lb n/a engines. Also a little confused by their motto: intercept, confront, euthanize ???

Congrats... One day you'll look back on that 150 with love...

Why do engine related failures cause fatal crashes in fixed wing aircraft?

I think the issue is a lot of private pilots don't really make any effort to improve their skills and treat flying much like driving a car. I would bet if you look at the types of flying pilots involved in engine outs do, those that fly aerobatics, or fly in the bush or do other type of things...
