    Volume Coefficients

A recent article of a well know Aviation Magazine, has quoted a formula in Error, of the Volume coefficient (Vh) of the Horizontal Tail (St). Now for a novice designer, this misquoted formula could be confusing, it certainly confused me as at first glance it seem similar to what I have used...

    New Time to Climb Record

For general information, I figure I can't copy it to this forum, but Kitplanes Weekly has an article on the new Time to Climb Record using a Rotary Engine, it is interesting and informative, but not the build approach for the average builder- far too complex. They used the Bell (very large and...

    Propeller Design

I have been working on Jan Carlsson's Prop Design Program for the last few weeks, a very interesting but frustrating process. I now see the light at the end of the tunnel, but was wondering if anyone had gleaned any additional information from Jan before he departed. I wish I had know more about...

    Neutral Point

I've looked at several different formula for NP, mainly RC models, but none seem to agree enough for Light Sport size aircraft- might be close enough for models. Does anyone have a good reliable formula for NP? It would be greatly appreciated. TIA George

    Refining my design.

Now refining my design, I looking at HT and VT areas. The 'General Aviation Aircraft Design' (GAAD) Book confirms there's confusion on calculating the VT Area (something I have been experiencing for a while). Some take the middle of the Rear fuselage as the start point (if the VT is vertical)...

Strake Design, Doral /Ventral Fin Design and Slotted Flap and Intake design.

I've been searching the web for some specific design guidance on subjects in the abovementioned Title. Does anyone have any guide to Texts or material on these subjects? Intake is Intake on the slotted flaps. George (down under)

    Aircraft Surface Drag

To all, I have been struggling with L/D estimations/calculations. I came across a book by Steve Brandt which gives good guides to Surface Area calculations. To find Cdo his formula is Cdo-Cfe(Swet/S). He provides Cfe as 0.0055 (for Single Prop Light Aircraft), so all I really need is the Swet...

    Jabiru Engines

I promised to respond to a thread that discussed the fact that the Jabiru Engine Manufacturer had closed his door. I ended up contacting Jabiru and they indeed confirmed that the company which Jabiru outsourced Engine manufacture, had indeed closed it's door due to reduced demand and increased...

    Anhedral in a Horizontal Stabilizer

I have been looking at the Blackshape prime and it's predecessor the Asso-X , both have little Wing Dihedral and generous HS Anhedral. I see that a lot in Fighter aircraft and was hoping someone could give me a good reason for Anhedral in a HS. I initially thought it may be to compensate for...

Does anyone have an RV 3 or know of the Airplanes L/D Ratio? TIA George

The Benefits of Anhedral in the Horizontal Stabilizer

Looking at the new Boeing T-X Jet Trainer and some LSA like Black Shape Prime and it's predecessors, I'm wondering what the benefits are of the Anhedral of the HS Or are they trying to minimize some other effect like Anhedral in the wing? TIA. George Lendich

All Purpose Propeller Diameter {between TO/ climb and Cruises} is selected how?

I've used Stinton's formula for Prop Diameter i.e. 10,000 *(4th Root or P(bhp)/ 53.5*RPM^2 * V(tas)). Now I can better define the Cruise rpm I can identify the Cruise TAS, I have the Max RPM and therefore Max TAS. 'Sadraey' suggests that for Straight and Level Flight just over 50% Power is...

Why is 75% power in Aircraft engines not 75% of Max RPM

As we all know HP is Cubic Inches x RPM/ 5252 = HP. For Instance the Cessna 172 Lycoming O -360 rated at 180 HP, is at Max Power at RPM of 2700 and Cruise at 75% power is at 2,500 - however 75% of 2,700 is 2025 RPM not 2500 RPM. We see that 2,500 rpm is only 92.599%. Looking further we can...

    Climb Speed Calculations

I'm researching Propeller design while researching the General Aviation Aircraft Design Book by Snorri Gudmundsson and wondered if someone had a rule of thumb formula for climb speed. I want to see/ assess the difference between Cruise speed, max speed and climb speed for my calculations for...

    Curved Leading Edge Wing Tips

I have been observing that many new LS designs especially European Designs have curved leading edge Wing Tips; Curved leading edge Vertical Stabilizer; curve leading edge Horizontal Stabiliser and was wondering if there as ay firmly established guide to performance benefits. Initially believed...

    Riblett GA 35A 415 Airfoil

Can anyone give me the stall angle of the Riblett GA 35A 415 Airfoil for the 2x10^6 and the 6x10^6 Reynolds numbers. I would ask Orion but he no longer with us and the E-mail address bounces back, so he must have been the sole operator of his company. Perhaps Billski can answer this one as he's...

    Light Aircraft Motors

I've seen many a discussion on motors over the years and my conclusion from my point of view is that little can achieve the same degree of power/ economy and failsafe than the Diesel motor. I had thought that a Mazda Rotary in a Diesel/ Jet A fuel system would be the answer. This would...

    Aircraft Design/Calculations/ Spreadsheets

I've seen a number of questions relating to basic design and I've had many of those questions myself over the years - and still have many questions. Suggestions about obtaining the many textbooks can't be overrated, however I suspect that much of the maths is difficult for many to manage -...

Hello (from Australia) to all Aviation Entusiasts. I'm in Brisbane, Queensland and Local to Duncan (RTFM), he suggested I joined the forum. My Title is short for my surname, Lendich. I have the Vision Plans but intend to vary the design somewhat. After checking all the parameters, using the...
