    Bolt it

Another point of interest is that welded joints are harder to inspect without specialist knowledege and equipment, and unless these inspection are performed you cannot be sure that the joint has the required integrity. Bolts are easier for the home builder to inspect and use in this case.

Toyota 2.2 D-4D New Engine of Choice

As an aside, I heard an interesting bit of information about engines yesterday. This was from a mate of mine who has a very successful business repairing auto engine ignitions here in South Africa. He also worked with some Formula 1 racing company on such systems, as he has designed and made a...

    Ribs and plywood vs. truss

Thanks for all the information guys; over the last few weeks it all ground to a halt as I decided to enlarge the workshop slightly by knocking a wall down. Whilst I had some builders about I thought that I might as well enlarge the kitchen as I had planned to do as well... And now it is a...

    Ribs and plywood vs. truss

Thanks Rob, I understand that- I will still go for the break test to check for equivalent strength between the truss and ply. Jay

    Ribs and plywood vs. truss

OK - found the GP4 Vne easily; sorry should have thought about a quick search before I submitted the post. Vne is 250 mph; not too far off the SAL P-51 Vne of 300mph. I'll take a closer look at the photo; do you know what thickness that ply is? I see that my last post went through twice for...

    Ribs and plywood vs. truss

Thanks Rob, I mailed the plans supplier/ designer and they responded as follows: "Sorry, we do not have plans for ribs made from plywood. The truss ribs were designed by a very well experienced aeronautical engineer, Bill Bruce. He chose the structure to withstand a Vne of 300 mph. If you...

    Ribs and plywood vs. truss

Yep, that's my plan. I will make one of each and then load them. I should be able to post some pics and results in a while. The idea is to break the truss type and the load the solid ply rib to the same degree; if it does not break then I will cut some holes to lighten it and try again...

    Ribs and plywood vs. truss

It may be fun at times, but I have to make 60 of the damned things! (15 per side for 2 aircraft...) I have been seriously considering making the ribs for my aircraft (SAL P-51 Mustang) out of ply instead of using trusses - I can cut and shape 4 ribs at once and then glue cap strips top and...

    Leveling long bits when cutting

Have you tried SAA (see www.flysaa.com); they are the South African carrier and will have flights to Malawi as well. They also fly direct from Atlanta or NY, sometimes with a stopover on an island along the way depending on wind- normally only when flying from Johannesburg to NY as they cannot...

    Leveling long bits when cutting

Hi there Craig, Not sure what the cheapest would be - have never done it that way around! And only once from my side to the lower states. What I can tell you, from bitter experience, is not to try and save by booking flight A with airline X and flight B with airline Y because the...

    Leveling long bits when cutting

Whenever I have to cut or drill some long pice of material I always found it a problem to keep it level and supported, especially if you are cutting or drilling at one end. I was always hunting about the workshop to find bits of wood to shim the **** thing up. One day I hit on an idea of...

    S-51

Hello Damien, also new; just joined now. I am building a SAL 2/3 Mustang but was very interested in the S-51 last year. Here is why I chose the SAL (taken from something that I will post on my website when I get it going): I then started trying to find plans to build from. I looked at the...
