    just a thought: you might look into carbon fiber mast and boom sections for sailboats. Building a light weight, reliable, durable shaft drive seems to have been a real bugger throught aviation history. There have been some successes (the p-39 comes to mind) and lots of failures (Lear, et.al.)...
