Thank you very much, that's all good information!

New/old member with Bakeng Deuce questions

Greetings all! I have been a member here for many years, but inactive for a long time. I can foresee activity in the future though, and figured it was time to get a bit more involved again. Briefly, I'm about a 180 hour pilot in Seattle, with lots of Cherokee and 152/172 time, and 12 hours...

    Electronic insterments

That's what I would expect for minimums -- I was very surprised when I read the EAA article. The fact that I can't find it now suggests that I may be mis-remembering it, or confusing it with another "actually, you don't need any XYZ" type of article. Obviously, not a lawyer, so any advice I...

    Electronic insterments

Actually, Joe, according to FAR 91.205, you're not required to have any instruments at all in your amateur homebuilt experimental plane. I can't find the article now which explains it, but reading over 91.205 (which outlines all the required equipment), it's probably because that reg only...

Time to rewrite the air combat handbook

I respectfully disagree. However, I don't think this is a productive discussion to have online, since it's far too easy for us to miscommunicate. I apologize for raising the point. If we meet in person at some point, I'd be glad to discuss it then.

Time to rewrite the air combat handbook

Am I the only one who sees this as a really terrifying sign of the US's willingness for war? Really, with the propaganda-esque speech and Soviet-sounding music in the background, all I could think of was dystopian fantasy films. Neat airplane, but it utterly sucks that the thing's only purpose...

    Starter/generator

Hybrid cars typically use the electric half of the drivetrain to start the gas half if you're sitting still -- you've got the huge 30 HP electric motor sitting there, why not use it? That's not terribly applicable to airplanes, though, unless someone's working on a hybrid airplane system. I...

    plywood ?

"Probably not." It sounds like what you describe would be about as strong as what the plans call for, but I'm not an expert, and am not even familiar with the exact types of wood you mention. Of course, any time you deviate from the plans, you become the engineer. There are some good articles...

SOmething WOOD that the kids at school could make!

I haven't yet seen any 2-seaters that look like they'd fly happily behind a VW engine -- the VWs are a bit heavy and underpowered for hauling two people aloft, unless they're really skinny people. :D Looks like the VP-2 is a side-by-side two-seater...

SOmething WOOD that the kids at school could make!

The Ragwing at least claims to have a surprisingly low build time (they claim 400 man hours). That seems well within the capabilities of a year-long shop class with 20 students. Of course, claimed build time and actual build time can vary significantly. ;)

SOmething WOOD that the kids at school could make!

John, I'm interested to hear of your progress -- I'm looking into a Ragwing Special II as being an interesting plane to build myself. I'm particularly interested in how realistic their "400 man-hour" claimed build time is, although I'm sure the skill and/or enthusiasm mismatch between myself...

    Folding-wing biplane?

For myself, there would also be lighting wires (quick-disconnect connectors aren't hard to deal with, though) and pitot air (again, not a show-stopper, but another complication). What I really like about the Ranger design is that nothing has to be disconnected. For what it's worth, it does...

    Folding-wing biplane?

Thank you, PTAirco, you're the first person I've run across who's actually seen one in person! I'm glad to hear the folding mechanism works as advertised, that is very encouraging. On the glassed-on ply ribs, that seems like a better method than riveting or doing anything else which would put...

    Folding-wing biplane?

What's interesting about the Sherwood Ranger is that (they claim) the folding process only takes a few minutes, and doesn't involve detaching any controls or unrigging anything. I've yet to see one of these things in person, so I take that claim with a huge grain of salt, but if it's true...

    Folding-wing biplane?

I've read a lot of your site before, very interesting stuff, Colin. Did you decide that the cost of hangarage was worth more than the hassle of folding/trailering? I can easily foresee myself getting frustrated with monthly costs well before I get frustrated with hooking a trailer up to a...

    Folding-wing biplane?

Yep, that's why it would be my first choice. I should head out there some sunny Saturday and see if I can corner any biplane pilots. That's what I figured. That question will also be answered if I go visit on some sunny Saturday. Indeed they do, and they're cheap, but uncovered storage...

    Folding-wing biplane?

I've thought about Harvey Field, since that's where I'd probably want to fly from anyway. It just doesn't feel right to fly a small biplane out of an asphalt strip. :D I do recall looking for info on Harvey's hangers, and came away with the impression that they were about as pricey as...

    open source free plans

I'm late to this thread, but I wanted to chime in on the Open model. What ragflyer said about the Linux kernel is very true -- if you want a successful open anything, it has to be configurable. For something like an airplane design, it'll have to be configurable in very limited ways to remain...

    Folding-wing biplane?

I've been pondering building a plane for a year or two now, and actually gave up on it half a year ago due to the huge ongoing costs of hangaring, insurance, etc. With the return of decent flying weather, I gave the idea another shot, and ran across the Sherwood Ranger, which is a wood and...

I got to poking around and found this page, on a jet-powered Cri Cri: http://www.aerospaceweb.org/question/planes/q0275.shtml Now that's cute!
