    FRED #528 construction log

Fuselage rear section cover: The bottom cloth is a certified 2.7 OZ to take all the abuse from stones and weeds and it is done first. The 1.7 OZ sides follow and top covering comes last and its also the non-certified 1.7 OZ superflight. The tapes are either 3" wide or 1" wide-depends on the...

Rear Wheel assembly: Took some time off covering to "go metal" for a nice change of pace... FRED plan calls for either sledge type or wheel assembly and originally I prefered the simplicity of the sledge- until some nasty ground loop in the Youtube convinced me that the least I can do for...

Has anybody was able to conduct business with Great Plains new owner?

I've ordered my engine from Sonex, receive attention to all my requests AND changes in the cart, I feel secure to send them $K from 4000 miles. The oversea phone calls I had to make to GPSA cost me $120...there was no reply from the mail for weeks. CD package follow up number was TOTALY wrong,-...

Has anybody was able to conduct business with Great Plains new owner?

Sorry-nothing that has to do with $500 deposit. Its common and acceptable practice around the world. I've posted a fair warning to proceed with EXTREME CAUTION (good advise to any other businees where you pay $8000 prior to shipping) and thats all I can contribute at this point on the GPAS...

Has anybody was able to conduct business with Great Plains new owner?

Sorry for the non-happy end here- after placing the engine order- things did NOT improve. Before sending him $500 advance- I've asked the $80 CD to be send to IsraeI. This turned out to be a bigger fiasco then the engine order. To make long story short- I've cancelled GPSA and ordered 2100cc...

Rib Stitching-- pure fun. I spray very light coat of 3M glue spray on the rib to support the reinforcing tape which has a slight sticky surface-but not enough to hold in a hot summer and measure 4 times the rib length for the cord. FRED does not need stiching since its VNA is below 100 KT- but...

Anti Chaff taping- Best in wood structure to cover all ply gussets and wood members that will be rib stiched. The Ekobond will penetrate the tape to form a smooth surface bed -for the dacron cloth.

Has anybody was able to conduct business with Great Plains new owner?

Thanks Mike! Yes- I know exactly what I need down to the carb selection and have Steve's Catalog which I think is just a piece of wall paper by now. Steve had many Pre-Assembled section like- ready made exhusts with heat, balanced crackshaft, Flywheel bed type engine mount, Pre weld intake...

Has anybody was able to conduct business with Great Plains new owner?

In order to get a waiver and get self maintenence without A&P- I need to construct the engine myself. So..its either Sonex Aero 2100 cc or GPAS 1835 cc. The single seat light FRED needs 60 Hp or 55 Hp cont. and Sonex is 80 hp since its 2100cc and build for twin seaters type (not to mention 30%...

Fixing rejects: One big demeret was the proximity of the aileron wires at their intersection point. Good chance that they will rube against each other sooner or later. so-DRW14 provides the construction plan for a nylon bridge to be used to raise the upper wire thus preventing contact: I've...
