    Electric Starters for Rotax 277?

My Gpl starter came off a 503 so the housing was a d4. I believe if I would have had the free air housing the retro would have been a success. The flywheel gear would have to be spaced for proper gear lash. Since that time I am flying an Airbike with a 503 and abandoned the retro. The Gpl...

    Electric Starters for Rotax 277?

that pict was on my 277. i had to use spacers to allow for the starter and ring gear to mesh properly. since the starter housing was away from the crankcase vibration allowed cracks to form at the 4 bolt locations. this idea would work if you had a ringed spacer to eliminate the small round...

    RIP Mark Stull

Mark did several high speed taxi runs the day before and told me later the nose would not pitch up for lift off. The next day he added 5 in of positive incidence to the wing as seen in the picture. This did enable the plane to lift off but the elevator did not have enough authority to bring the...

    RIP Mark Stull

He came to my hanger several times all excited about a new design. He would pull a napkin out of his pocket and there it was. He and his friend Johnny Williams trailered his starsII to fun n sun one year of course it was a hit. Btw the stars II was a ultralight bi-plane designed so if he had a...

    RIP Mark Stull

Yes his ringtail along with his “stars” designed aircraft flew very well. We went on many flights together. As Tim stated his fatal flight was with the new design using a fixed trike wing. Still miss him very much. Monte

What fuel oil and gearbox oil for the 277?

Seals on the 277 can only be installed by splitting the crankcase. monte

Setting Up a 2-Sttoke for Direct Drive

I talked to Mark many times since we were at the same airpark. When he first had the thought of trying a dd on his mz201 he knew that it would require a small inefficient prop to develope and keep the engine in the power band. His first flight attempt was unsuccessful so the prop was re-pitched...

    Reliability of Rotax 2-strokes

I just replaced the two crank end seals on my Rotax 503 by splitting the crankcase. These seals have a small ridge on the edge to fit into a groove in the case halves to keep pressure from forcing them out. I don't see how you could replace them with the crankcase halves bolted together and...

    Mini-Max thoughts.

I flew a max-103 for 5 yrs. the mini-max line of aircraft are proven safe and fly very well. I'm not a builder so I bought mine used but if you are a builder there is plenty of help available on the forum Lynn stated. Monte

New engine and carb. Proving not very reliable.

I had a similar problem on my 277. after inspection I discovered that a wire on the stator had broke a solder joint connection on a coil. I resoldered then applied silicone to secure all the wires to the stator base. these engines vibrate a lot and that put me into a field. monte

    Part 103 regs help

I had a brief encounter with the faa over the phone after a forced landing in sticks. The person on the phone didn't know what a part 103 u/l was. After asking what my pilot license # was, then my n-number, how many passengers etc. she said she could not find them on file. I said you won't...

    Rotax 447 Ignition/kill switch Specs?

Mike one note about why these modules sometimes fail is turning the engine over with the ign. on and the plug leads not attached. not that you did that, just a thought. monte

Help, 2SI 460 (cuyuna) fuel prob

Bill I would drop the carb bowl and make sure the needle is free from the seat, next check the arrows on the pump for correct flow direction, at last pull the fuel line from the pump and try to suck fuel from the tank. Monte

    Carb jetting

Matt in the summer I generally fly in the morning because of the heat and dust devils. my egt run around 1130 and OAT is around 75-80 deg. I thought you were at a higher altitude flying in Canada, at the altitude and temps stated the jetting you are using is probably close. monte

    Carb jetting

Matt the numbers on the rotax jet chart are at sea level. take your altitude and temp where you are flying and use the correction chart to get the right jet size. since the 158 is at msl you will probably have to go smaller on the jet size. I fly a 503 dcdi at 1900 ft. msl. during the summer I...

Spiders...Look what I found when heading to the hangar this morning.

I have several black widows in my hanger that handle my bug control so I don't kill them. They are not aggressive to people and getting bit is very hard unless you try to. I once had a large tarantula there for several months and became friends. Monte

New engine and carb. Proving not very reliable.

It doesn't look like detonation to me and the cylinder is damaged beyond a honing. The piston doesn't look like oem either. If that was my engine I would pull the other jug and check the piston skirt/cylinder clearance with a bore micrometer. Pistons expand at different rates and require...

    Octane booster

If it was me I would fill the the tank as is with fresh fuel and go flying as I have many times. But to clear your mind from worry do what rocky said and burn it in your vehicle. Monte

    New addition to my hanger

I recently retired my mini-max and now flying a Ison Airbike. It has a rotax 503, brs, and 800x6 tundra tires. I definitely like the view from cockpit better than the mm. Monte
