    quick certification question

Topaz, Not to argue, but.... If the instructor is giving instruction he/she's the pilot in command (mostly) If it's in a homebuilt, then it's flying for hire, regardless of ownership of the plane. So it could be one of those "grey areas" I seriously doubt there'd be any sort of...

    quick certification question

You can't do instruction in a homebuilt. What you need to do is get your endorsement for whatever type of homebuilt you will fly. In my case after I get IFR, I also need tail wheel, complex and high performance to fly the RV I plan on building in the next year or so. Tailwheel -...

    FAA Private Pilot Study Guides?

Getting ready to take my written exam. I've taken the practice exam that is up at www.sportys.com (72%!") I need to study up a bit on VOR/ADF Operations and Sectional/Terminal Charts I also need to do a little more reading on fronts/weather/meterology. I have my Jeppensen Private Pilot...

    E6-B Flight Computer Tutorials?

Hey all, I'm at the point of starting to plan cross-country flights and need a resource to help sharpen my skills with the E6-B flight computer. Anyone have any tips, or online guides? Thanks!

    First Lesson Tomorrow Morning

Found a great flight school here in the Phoenix Metro area. I've been in ground school for the past two weeks and my first "in-flight" lesson is tomorrow morning. Wheeee!

Weight Difference Between VW and 13B

12 GPH is probably with a poorly done auto conversion using auto carbs or Mikuni Motorcycle carbs. Tracy's setup is EFI. Part of my considerations for the 13B rotary was the fact that it makes LOTS of power with decent fuel consumption. Compare to a Lycoming 0-360 (9-12 GPH) Hrm...

Weight Difference Between VW and 13B

Actually I'd heard the 2300cc VW and 13B are both about 7-8 GPH. I could be misinformed tho. Tracy Crook's RV-4 gets between 6-8 GPH. http://www.rotaryaviation.com/rvotter.html Quite honestly, I'll deal with 50% Higher consumption rate for twice the power. So 180 - 200 lbs for VW...

Weight Difference Between VW and 13B

I got word back from Tracy Crook, said installed weight is around 260 for a 13B with Redrive. Of course a few more pounds could be shaved possibly. (Lightweight Alternator, custom intake instead of factory, etc.) Still waiting to hear back from Great Plains. 100 or more pound difference...

Weight Difference Between VW and 13B

I knew off hand that a 13B was easily over 100 HP, and I'd heard to expect 160 at minimum with a good carb/exhaust setup I was just saying over 100 as a generalization. ;-) So off hand, estimate 13b flying weight with PSRU, etc, at what? 300 Lbs? Tracy Crook's Redrive is about 43lbs. Great...

Weight Difference Between VW and 13B

Quick Question to compare power plants VW 2300 CC is about 80 HP. 13B (NA)is over 100 The real question is what will the "nose weight" of each power plant be? Starter, accessories, etc, etc. I know with a 13b there will be an oil cooler and PSRU that the 2300 won't need. Any...

Sport Pilot / VFR Private Pilot Study Guides?

So people can (albeit not optimal) stretch their training over what could be considered a long time span? I was hoping I might be able to stretch it over 6 months - 1 year tops. Since moving to Phoenix, I've noticed that with over 320 VFR flight days a year, there's a TON of flight schools...

Sport Pilot / VFR Private Pilot Study Guides?

Any tips for the beginning student? I'm familiar with the mechanics of flight, and know to read all the gauges. I've even had quite a bit of 'unofficial" stick time. If I understand correctly a good portion of the knowledge test is quoting FAA regulations? You said it took you about...

Sport Pilot / VFR Private Pilot Study Guides?

Hey all, Time for me to start doing prepwork for my Sport Pilot certification. I've read that the training is nearly identical to VFR with the exception of radio training. I'd imagine I could just pick up a VFR study guide and be okay? Thanks.

    ultralight airplane, seeking info

Oh, BTW. Your EAA guy does not know what he's talking about. Might want to point him to this URL: http://www.eaa.org/ultralights/news/2005%20-%2001_26%20-%20EAA%20Files%20Comments%20Favoring%20Ultralight%20Weight%20Exemption.html Basically, the EAA was trying to get an exemption to...

    ultralight airplane, seeking info

As for aluminum, Aircraft Spruce is your best bet. My wife's uncle is a machinist, so I've kinda got a hook up there, so unless you know a welder or a machinist, try calling metal supply companies locally. You'll save some $$$$ on shipping. Also, the EAA I think is not going to be much...

    ultralight airplane, seeking info

Yes, there's no "active" plan in the sense it's not up for approval this very minute. It was brought up at Oshkosh as something in consideration to bring the safetly levels up on UL's. Good luck getting any ultralight under 245 lbs unless it's a bicycle frame and a hang glider wing. ;-)

    ultralight airplane, seeking info

I'm training in a Challenger II as well. Once again, I live 3 miles from the factory. Can't toss a paper airplane around these parts without hitting a challenger pilot. That's the only issue I have is the challenger is nose wheel. I'm gonna have to find a tail wheel plane to get some time...
