TeenieToo to Windwagon to H-Bird to Aerobat

Or you could use a McCullough 4130 on the front of a HB with a Riblet airfoil and cruise at 145mph @ 3800rpm burning 4.5 gph, (of course you need wing tanks) thay makes for a fun little plane!

Protective film on aluminum - take it OFF, NOW!

I had a Sorell hyper light with that stuff on the ailerons. Couldn’t pay my kids enough to try and take off by trying to peel it. And then…. 1 trip to the car wash with a high pressure hose, all gone! Was so easy wished I would have done it first.

    search for original hanglider plans

I think an SST is about as old of a kite that I would fly. That’s the era I started flying, and a friend of mine had one while I flew a later model WW SS1. I always was able to out fly him. Later though I started working for Bill Bennet building/flying/ and shipping kites all around the world...

    search for original hanglider plans

I learned in LA basin at Playa Delray. Flew with Joe Greblo who owned Southern California School of Hangliding. Ended up working and teaching for them. If you ever saw a hang glider in a movie, he probably did it if it was out of LA. He is a really good pilot and guy for that matter. Lost touch...

    search for original hanglider plans

Very unlikely to start a sport flying vintage hang gliders. There is a reason they had such a dangerous reputation in the early days. It wasn’t just that anybody could grab one and jump off a cliff, they were just flat out dangerous. I am talking from experience as having my hang 4 rating and...

    Hummel Bird

That was a nice and useful update. Where are you at on your build?

    Hummel Bird

If you don’t have the money for extra speed (bigger engine) and have not started on you wings yet. I suggest using the Riblett air foil that I used. It’s faster, less drag, more lift and stronger. Doesn’t cost any more money than the stock Clark -Y. It’s a no brainer. In fact even if you do use...

    Hummel Bird

Yes I have that video is ME! I had home made headers on it and I am telling you it was no louder than gear drive car engine.

    Hummel Bird

I think that video speaks for itself. No noisier than any other plane with an open exhaust just a different tone. It sounded a lot like a reduction drive car engine. Nobody flies one without an upgraded magneto. De rating it by lowering the compression to cure a perceived vibration is...

    Hummel Bird

What you need to remember is that the original Hummelbird wasn’t a Hummelbird but a Gary Watson wind wagon. No turtle deck or canopy. And if not mistaken a tail dragger (lighter). Like so many other designs that someone got a whole of and napkin engineered changes to as the weight grew so the...

    Hummel Bird

The fact that Bruce King built a Hummelbird with a 4 cylinder VW and then immediately designed the the BK-1 should tell you NOT to goe that route. the wing skins wrinkled because of the extra weight. If you want a Hummel with more power just use the McCullogh. That’s an easier build.

    POLINI THOR 250

Good advice! Always try to use an engine thats rated for 1/4 more hp then you need. So at cruise it is at 3/4 of its maximum output. Especially 2 strokes. I am a definite proponent of 2 strokes and have successfully flown behind them on that principle for many trouble free hours. I use as an...

    Rotax options...are there any ?

Sorry no experience with the 2 cylinder. The 4 cylinder engines are far more common, because of the use by gyro guys.

    Rotax options...are there any ?

Yup 72hp 4.5 gph you have Togo through a 500$ one to make it reliable. Electronic ignition and new bearings. That’s what makes it 1k. I wrote an article on it in sport pilot, April 2006. And I have a comprehensive webpage that explains the lows and highs, does and don’ts . I am maybe not an...
