Spar inspection results raise FAA concern

Not to mention the testing that will need to be done to certify a machined-from-billet replacement vs the original forging. There is a significant difference in the failure modes of a forged part and a billet machined one, caused by the way the metal grain flows around the shape in a forging. I...

I would love to build a Patrol rather than the LSA. I wouldn't register it as LSA anyway. But honestly the LSA actually covers my mission, and has flown on Corvair power already. William Wynn even has an engine mount for this combo! Given his reputation for helping builders, I will certainly...

I do have 4 cases and sets of heads...... Good to know, thanks! I am tentatively planning to build WW's 3.0L, should run about 120 HP.

The insurance issue is a significant concern. I plan to manage some of the risk with an LLC owning the actual plane, that reduces the risk to my property quite a bit.

PP is a given. I am pretty set on the Corvair. I am a machinist by trade, and try to know and do as much as possible with every piece of equipment I own. An engine that I can build, with everything besides the case new, for less than a many-times-rebuilt O390 crankshaft, is going to be really...

All good points. I think the Bearhawk LSA just might cover the bases, Bob Barrows does good design!

Thanks for the link to vr3.ca, nice resource! I really want to use the Corvair engine, which limits me to about 120 HP. Has anybody actually flown a Patrol on that low of power? I know the website says "115-210 HP" but iseem to recall most builders running 150-160 at least.

PP, absolutely! There is actually a chance that I will get a job offer for a company that will pay for PP as a benefit, and then allow my to fly on business trips, so I need to get at least single engine land with instrument rating.

The tubing kits are unavailable, somehow I mentally equated that to no fuselage kit! That is certainly the best mission fit I have seen anywhere.

The Bearhawk LSA is definitely on my list! I will need to learn to weld 4130 tubing, or hope for a factory welded fuselage, is the only thing keeping me from saying that is the one.

BJC has a point. The RV-8needs about 150HP,the Brokaw Bullet flew with 250HP up to a turboshaft. The Sonerai 2 is interesting, I will look closer at it, thanks! I wish there was a tandem version of the KR2S, that would fit both my mission and my construction method comfort zone.

The mission is easily described. About 600lbs payload (not useful, actual payload), 120 MPH cruise, 4 hours duration.

Hello all, I am (clearly) new here. I have read about, and considered, homebuilding since I was a kid 40 years ago. My pilots license is finally within reach, KR style foam so I need to build a plane. No idea which one yet! My wife won't ride in the front seat, so I am looking for a tandem 2...
