    Question for Canadian Pilots

I was having an adult beverage with a fellow pilot the other day and the discussion turned to the documents we are required to carry on board the aircraft. I was taught the mnemonic 'ARROW JIC' (C of A, C of R, Radio license, Owners manual, Weight & Balance, Journey Log, Insurance documents...

    Weighing an aircraft

It has been a while since my aircraft was weighed so I thought it a good idea to do it again. Last time it was weighed it was on wheels so it was relatively easy. This time it is on floats. The problem I had was it was virtually impossible to position the scales so that the weight was...

    Con Rod Bolt Thread Lubricant

I am in the process of assembling the crankshaft on my O-320 H2AD. Lycoming SI 1458G specifies Loctite 8014 Food Grade Antiseize as a thread lubricant. Apparently that stuff is made out of unicorn spit. My local Loctite dealer has never even heard of it. Lycoming does not specify any...

    Ring end gap

When I look up the ring end gap for my engine (O-320 H2AD) there are two specs. One for straight barrel cylinders, and another for choke barrels. I miked my cylinders top and bottom and they seem to be the same, but how do I know for sure if I have straight or choke barrels?

    Con Rod Bolt Torque

It's time to start reassembling my engine. The overhaul manual I have gives a torque spec of 40 ft-lbs. for the con rod bolts. Seems a little old fashioned. Is there a spec for bolt stretch or torque angle for the con rod bolts on a Lycoming O-320 H2AD?

    Rivet replacement

I am working on my Murphy Rebel over the winter and have discovered some smoking rivets. This after 27 years and about 1000 flight hours, all of it on floats. The rivets in question are 1/8" Avex blind rivets and are loaded in shear. Apparently AVEX rivets are not readily available any more...

    Paint remover

So I talked to my machine shop today and my plan was originally to have my engine case 'hot tanked' to clean it up. However, my guy informed me that the tank they use for aluminum parts will remove grease and not much else. Grease isn't my problem, but paint is. My new plan is to clean up the...

    Crankshaft welch plug

As part of the work I am doing on my Lycoming O-320 H2AD I need to remove the welch plug (expansion plug) in the front of the crankshaft, inspect for corrosion, and if all is well, replace the welch plug. (SI#1583) Lycoming specifies a welch plug installation tool (PN 64681) to install the...

    Lycoming O-320 H2AD

I fly a Murphy Rebel with an O-320 H2AD engine. The airplane has been in storage for a number of years and I recently resurrected it. I put about 25 hours on it this summer, and while it performed very well, I decided to tear into the engine over the winter, given the stories of camshaft...

    External loads

There are a number of homebuilt float planes around here. (Northwestern Ontario) I myself fly a Murphy Rebel. Strapping a boat or lumber onto the floats is not terribly uncommon, but I was recently told by someone with a lot more flying experience than I have (although none with amateur built...
