Just how fast was the SR-71?

Things like this have been proposed for rockets. iirc this is a pet idea of the guy who lead the design of the merlin engine for spacex. The studies I've seen for air breathing rockets use a much flatter trajectory than a normal rocket ascent.

Flying with a piston engine to FL 600

I can't recall his name now, but there was a college professor from a midwestern university working on a high-alt piston record setter but he passed away before it was finished. This was within the past 10-15 years.

    Faking the curves?

This reminds me of a system Walter Rethel of Arado came up with. A kind of stave barrel style construction; This should be doable with CAD+water jet+bending brake.

    Kitplanes Engine Buyer's Guide 2024.

Where are you getting that fuel burn figure from? Their brochure gives "Fuel Burn 7.3 gal/hr (27.6 L/hr)at 135 HP Economy Cruise 10.8 gal/hr (40.9 L/hr) at 180 hp" Which is a bit worse than I would have expected from a diesel.

    Three cylinder VW

This was also done by Anzani on an experimental twin. It would be really fun to build a 4/6 cyl boxer like this and get v12 like smoothness; The Hickman referenced in the above refers to this interesting approach to the same problem. Both images from; Aircraft Piston Engines - Herschel Smith
