    Yamaha-Powered STOL Highlander

Several planes were running reversible props this year at Reno. Not as much of an advantage as 425hp though. Watch the Reno races on youtube, they talk about it.

Mistral G200 Rotary Engine ECU question

In defense of the Raspberry Pi, my company makes industrial automation products. Subject to heat, cold, vibration, and oil mist in the air. Used lots of different "industrial" computers typically based on Intel processors. After having dozens of the Intel industrial computers fail in the field...

    LS3 conversion for RV10

I watched that video on that SR-22 as I'm always curious now when big bore continentals go down (I went down flying behind one). This Cirrus was a manufacturing defect in the camshaft. My final report isn't out yet, but I'm confident mine was also a manufacturing defect (camshaft gear). I plan...

    Two engines one prop

"Always having a place to land out" is nonsense and not a part of any flight training I received. Even in a glider, there will be portions of a flight, depending on the airfield, in which there is no safe land out option. Far less time is spent with no safe land-out option with a glider than the...

    Two engines one prop

Sounds like you've never had an engine failure over terrain in which there was no safe landing option. That's not an argument to support this engine configuration. To assume every engine out can have a successful glide to safety is not true.

    Fuel burn - a comparison

I find the 912is loses little TAS as I climb, fuel burn just drops. About 0.2 gph/drop per 1000 feet as I recall. I couldn't find the picture but on a hot day, up at 16.5K, I have seen under 3gph while maintaining over 130ktas. I shoot for max TAS while staying in eco mode (LOP) and that usually...

    FAA dropping detail from charts

Seems like we should be going the other direction in terms of providing actionable geographic safety data for pilots. How expensive would it be to map the US for best emergency landing areas and easily mappable hazards throughout the US territory? So your favorite EFB could display greenish...

Pros and Cons of Traditional Aircraft Engines

Lancair ES-P I was responding to the message that said most engine failures are external components rather than internal components. I experienced an internal component failure. My general view is that GA engines are not as reliable as they could be or should be. I suspect most automotive...

What is the "best" auto engine for aircraft use in the 250-350 HP range?

My airplane came out of the sky due to a fatigue failure of the camshaft gear on my TSIO-550. Based on my research, I estimate that about 1 out of 850 big bore Continental equipped airplanes have had a failure in flight due to this problem. That is a horrific failure rate for a known problem for...

40 + MPG Air and Auto Vehicles

My Pipistrel Virus SW with the 912is is 130KTAS in the mid-teens at about 3.2gph. Just under 50mpg going 150mph. When my Risen Superveloce 915is is finished, it should get about 220KTAS in the mid-teens at 7gph. About 36mpg going 250mph. I like fast and efficient.

    Cessna 182 production restarted

I had a 2007 T182T, a fantastic airplane. They are a bit nose-heavy. nothing a little trim can't fix. At 235HP, it's not a screamer like an SR22T. But they go 160KTAS+ in the low teens at 13.5gph/LOP and you can put a BRS chute in them for about $30K. About half the price of an SR22T and I would...

Any Thoughts on EVERYTHING ON switch for take-off, landing, and emergencies at low alttitude?

I lost the engine in my Lancair ES-P a couple of months ago over the Cascade range east of Eugene at about 5000' MSL. The terrain around me was between 1000' AGL and 3500' AGL (landing spot was about 1500' MSL). After a quick scan of the terrain, I concluded that I had a couple of minutes and...

Experimental (ELSA / E-AB) No Longer Allowed for Flight Training??

I got my LODA, took 1 week. And the FAA guy confirmed only one LODA is needed (plane owner or the CFI). Al.

Experimental (ELSA / E-AB) No Longer Allowed for Flight Training??

I sent in my request on Tuesday. I received an immediate reply of your request will be processed in the order received. I'm hoping I don't have to cancel my BIFR next week.

Experimental (ELSA / E-AB) No Longer Allowed for Flight Training??

This sucks. I have my BIFR scheduled for next week. It's bad enough they make the rule out of thin air. It's way worse that they plan to make it effective 4 days after they announce the change. Almost 24 hours later AOPA still appears to be silent on the issue. I hope they can get this fixed...

    My 13B engine configuration (tentative)

A bit off topic but I was out at the race track and got to talk to the guy that owns this bit of racing history: https://bringatrailer.com/listing/1985-mazda-rx-7-12/ and a little background...

    Flaps or flaperons

I fly a Pipistrel Virus SW (flaperons) and a Lancair ES-P (flaps). Although they are both great airplanes to fly, the Virus is really unique, especially in calm air. Aileron control is amazing, like it's on rails in the sky. I've always assumed it is due to the length of the control surface.
