The forgotten fighter plane which won the Battle of Britain

It would be easier to try to find a "fighter mafia" aircraft that wasn't extensively redesigned to become effective, or wasn't redesignated out of its intended role. The F-18 mentioned above is a prime example. A light fighter that was redesigned to such an extent that it isn't even remotely...

The forgotten fighter plane which won the Battle of Britain

Speaks for itself how? 109s were incredibly inefficient use of resources for the Luftwaffe, especially as the war went on. They were hideously expensive to build, hard to fly well, useless in anything but short range interception, and fragile. Kill/loss ratios are relatively meaningless...

Control IS stability. They rejected radical dihedral as a stability producing design feature, because it was only initially stable. In moving air, the inherent initial stability of dihedral becomes unstable. Which is the genius of their design.

The forgotten fighter plane which won the Battle of Britain

I love this subject; and there are several factors most "infotainment" fail to address. The Bf109 and Spitfire were both built from the "sport fighter" school of thinking, and suffered from the limitations imposed by that philosophy. Both were terminally limited by their small size, which was...

The Wright Brothers also imitated birds, but were the first to understand where birds' stability and control came from, and realized that stability and control were the Hokey Pokey of aviation. This book does a good job of describing the process:

I believe that is hyperbole. By "sexy" he means "cool factor".

Regardless of how he got there, with the leading edge slats and flaps, Buttercup has an amazing performance envelope for the era it was developed. I look at that stall and cruise speed with envy.

Did you try Google? Lots of metal shaping organizations/businesses in the Greater Seattle area.

Having said that, I really don't want a C150. I'm partial to rag and tube at least partly because it is a better medium for infinitely rebuildable aircraft.

I get that, but like the pictured car, replacement parts are available or remanufacturable. In the end it comes down to cost effectiveness. Personally, I can shape metal, so if I already owned a C150 all it would cost me is time, alloy and rivets.

    Simplicate & Add Lightness

This is too good of a subject to let it turn into a "those were the days" fest. As I'm thinking about my own future project, I'm going through some of the decisions needed to be made. I'm restricting myself to LSA standards, so tradeoffs must be made. The point is, you have to think...

    Simplicate & Add Lightness

I don't understand the point. Machines can be rebuilt nearly infinitely. That's how they last. As long as failures happen predictably, they continue to serve the purpose they were made for. BTW, that's original paint, interior and top on that car.

Why not? This is still running strong, despite nearly every moving part being replaced at least once.

    Metal tube joint basics

Total thread hijack, but I'm glad you asked. A little bit about myself: I served in tanks in the US Army for a bit over 10 years, and became a historian. Also published a couple articles on the subject. Bottom line: The Tiger I was an incredible collection of specifications which didn't add up...

best 100 HP auto/motorcycle engine conversion?

Ever regret making a comment on a forum? FYI, I've also owned a couple cubs and a Tri-Pacer, so I know what certified parts cost. This, combined with my experimental spirit is why I'm even looking at auto/cycle conversion engines. Even though an O-200 is the "easy button" for my LSA plans. But...
