Parts Wanted Tinnerman Nutplates, #8, Countersunk, One Leg

Mit kit uses the Tinnerman nutplates at some internal covers and one part came with drill holes placed too close to the edge, i believe by mistake. Pass drilled them without thinking and now the two legged plates don't fit. Before i use alternatives and have two different screw types for one...

    Interesting talk about homebuild submarines

It's in german but you can use auto translated captions. I like their engineering. And their expections are pretty modest (going down 11 meters only). Spirit of building for fun and show that you can, not to make big bucks like that other one.

    360 surround top view camera?

I don't mean Insta 360 and the likes. I mean that stitched video feed that modern cars have that give you a top down view of your vehicle. Technically it's just a video mixer that usually takes in 4 video signals and processes a new one stitched together. And since most planes don't reverse 3...

Not me but think that's pretty f'ing cool

    Antenna sealants

Notice a couple of antennas on Spruce are sold without a gasket, instead they ask you to use "3M™ AC-350 CLASS B AEROSPACE SEALANTS", something that is described as a fuel tank sealant. There is no description how to apply it in the context of an antenna mount. Do you apply it to the antenna and...

Moulding Hollow Carbon Fibre Parts Using a Low-Melt Metal Mandrel

Looks pretty smart for hollow parts

    Elbow torque and orientation

I really struggle to torque an elbow somehow to spec while keeping the right orientation. The torque is quite low and then you still need 3/4 of a turn and suddenly it's get brutal hard. I feel like over torquing elbows most of the time. Other than "get a feeling for it" are there any tricks to...

How do toggle switches in jets look so clean?

How are toggle switches mounted that you don't see the screw nuts or are those different type of toggle switches? Best guess is that those screwed into a second layer so that the nuts are hidden. The slip on color caps are pretty standard. Does anyone have a photo how those panels looks...

Tip to save money when ordering hazardous materials from the US

If you are a builder outside the US, Europe, Australia etc you might run into the same issue that i did. Some chemicals are simply nowhere to be found locally. I'm talking about stuff like ProSeal, rattle can spray etch primer, Alodyne or other aviation specific primers, specific glues etc. You...

    What's the story with pilotshop.com?

Shows up from time to time in searches. They look like a pixel by pixel clone of Aircraft Spruce. Is it a straight up scam or are they doing affiliate sales for Spruce? Everything strongly suggests scam but then why hasn't Spruce DMCA'ed them out of the Google search results?

Why are Phillips screws still so dominant in the aviation space?

Been working on my instrument panel and have been putting it on and off probably a dozen times now and can already see the first screws getting worn out. I'm using torque limiting on the screw driver. They just are not that great in principle. There are better alternatives like Torx but they are...

Most universal aluminum sheet for interior?

I have the option to either order custom pieces of any alloy and size from overseas (i.e. spruce) with expensive shipping or buy full sheets domestically for less. 1100 is plenty around in any size but it's pretty soft and i like to avoid it, i can source 6061, 6063, 7075, 5083 and 2024 but...

Does the Lycoming O-235 N2C have threaded holes for CHT probes?

Hello, wonder if the Lycoming O-235 N2C has threaded holes for the CHT probes that i can mount in bayonet style for the probes that come with the standard Dynon EMS 4 cylinder harness (EMSKIT-L4C) or do i have to buy the types that are mounted under the spark plugs? There is currently a single...

Which one of these two primers is better?

I'm looking for some universal primer for aluminium parts, used as is without any further coatings inside or with another coating like the instrument panel or bits and pieces on the outside with another coat. Ideally i want to just have one primer for everything. Where i live aviation grade...

How was the GA scene like in Ukraine before the invasion?

Been looking at some of the live maps of the developments in Ukraine and noticed lots of small airfields. I’m also aware of the long aeronautical engineering tradition in Ukraine. How was it like flying GA there before the Russian invasion? Anyone living there or has direct experiences?

    Starlink Aviation

https://www.starlink.com/aviation Not for your average homebuilt but could make inflight internet usable finally on commercial airliners. I'm sure they can make it smaller over time, less bandwidth and maybe eventually we see low cost inflight weather updates for GA with global coverage.

Open Source map content and EFIS'

Those flying outside the US and EU may know the problem. You have a fancy EFIS but the map content sucks. I know there are various subscription service providers but their coverage can also be spotty. But what about user generated maps like Openflightmaps or OpenAIP? Is there any EFIS for...

I have started a Discord Server for Experimental Amateur Built

Feel free to join, it only made it public a few days ago so it's still small https://discord.gg/bjArBKBMTg Why? I like the format and want it the happen. I think in the spirit of experimental aviation it's never a bad to try out something new and untested. Worst thing you fail and learn. Why...

Difference between "wash primer" and "primer"

Somehow assumed that a wash primer would be a water soluble primer so that parts can get "washed" in it. Turns out it's not, some 2K primer are also called "wash primer". What makes a wash primer a wash primer? Or is the word just meaningless?
