    RiggerRob, this ones for you.

When I retired I was an engineer working as an In Service Engineer for the Naval Air Warfare Training Systems Division (NAWCTSD), as a liaison officer to the Naval Survival Training Institute (NSTI) In Pensacola, FL. We were in charge of all technical engineering updates on training devices...

    RiggerRob, this ones for you.

Some years ago a cameraman got into the habit of putting on his rig on the climb to exit altitude. On his last jump he forgot and filmed all the way to the ground. Massive failures here in the jumper's attitude and the failure of even basic safety precautions. On most Dropzones jumpers...

A Ram-Air canopy in the sizes used in pilot's rigs are very docile and easy to maneuver. A 5 minute briefing would cover all you need to know about controlling and landing the canopy. Most owners manuals cover the info you need. A Ram-Air is packed with the brakes stowed (set) and I''d rather...

I understand what you are saying. my point is the rigger either repairs or retires any component not deemed airworthy during the AIR. You don't need an "expiration date" to determine serviceability.

Which is why they should be retired based on condition and not age. Mead Adventure's Softie (and my National 425) are in new condition and as such should not be limited by age. Fortunately National made a recommendation and not a firm life limit I grew up on a Drop Zone and have seen many...

I think you could get a written "dispensation" from Softie given the Performance Designs (PD) specifications on the canopy. The 20 year life limit on the harness/container is arbitrary anyway.

Gasoline contains volatile solvents that "gas-off" with time. If your canopy smelled like gasoline there is a good chance the canopy material (nylon) has been adversely affected by those solvents. While it may function as desired it also may not.

The Softies can be either although I think most all of them are Ram-Air.

BJC, I can only share my OPINION so please take this with a grain of salt. I have deployed ram air canopies at terminal velocity (120 MPH) below 1000 ft and was "in the saddle" at 700' (stable deployment). I haven't had the same experience with a round but the military routinely exits airborne...

You are correct there!!! Since the transition to squares in sport parachuting riggers familiar with rounds come almost exclusively from the military where it is still the preferred canopy for personnel use. I only used a packing table in the military. I pack round canopies on a cotton duck...

Good on ya BJC!!!! In the US there is no service life for parachute systems, they are "on condition". When I went to USAF riggers school in the early 70's we watched videos of deployments (at various airspeeds) of parachute systems that had been stored for over 20 years!!! there was no...

That is what they go for on the used market. There are a few for sale at about the same price on various venues. I'd have preferred a ram-air canopy (they open faster and are much more maneuverable) but a 26' conical will save your bacon just as well. I will say that RV6ejguy did take...
