    Sandlin Gliders: Builds, mods, flights

Here's a tool that I learned to appreciate greatly when cutting fiberglass and Dacron (note: it comes with a pinking blade, too):

    Sandlin Gliders: Builds, mods, flights

90%+ from Online Metals; the large 1-3/4 (but hard-to-find thin-walled .032") spar tubes from Wicks.

“Easiest” of Mike Sandlin’s Ultralights to build?

Only since Jan 2023 for me, motivated in part by getting down to flying weight for my finished Sandlin Bloop. From 210 to current 165 lbs. Never felt better (65 y/o), teeth, joint , skin, inflammation issues disappeared. A1C back to normal. No calorie counting, just as much beef, butter, bacon...

    Tube flattening techniques

Hardwood shims on cheap Harbor Freight vise - and a bronze hammer to finish. Also used this vise to ovalize the 1-1/2" dia. nose tube. Considering the force required, surprised it didn't break.

I guess it's true what they say, you never forget your first 27 airplanes! 😄

    Building a Wag-A-Bond

Yep, melamine fused onto mdf, about $45/board at the local big box hardware store for a 24x48x3/4. A bit of paste wax buffed-in makes dried epoxy pop off easily, too.

What is your interest and/or experience with homebuilt airplanes?

And one less wing to build! I understand designer Mike is in the 150 lb range. Since my Bloop build was 20-some pounds heavier than his (and I was pre-diabetic), I went on a Carnivore diet in January, and went from 215 to 170 lbs in 4 months. Still, don't think I'll ever make Bluebird weigh-in...

What is your interest and/or experience with homebuilt airplanes?

I fell in love with the Sandlin Bloop, a few years back, when I discovered Part 103, and realized my flying dreams could become a reality. During the year and a half build process, I had detached retinas at different times that required surgery. The temporary gas bubble in the right eye (that...

    "Thump Air" by KidKhaos6427

On the Badland website, I find prices in the $16,000 to $45,000 range (without engine or prop). $7,000 would be interesting.

AirVenture 2022: Where have all the Ultralights gone?

I see Mr. Koontz works out of Alabama - pretty far from my sweet home in Wisconsin! Now I'm looking at glider training as a base for flying this simple, two-axis ultralight. There's a glider club out of HXF also.

AirVenture 2022: Where have all the Ultralights gone?

Thanks for the reference! Yeah, probably like the 100-year-olds that drank whiskey and smoked cigars since the roaring twenties without ill effect.

AirVenture 2022: Where have all the Ultralights gone?

Well, no dice so far. Left a detailed web form and phone message at Steve Krog's Cub Air Flight last week (out of HXF), so fingers crossed on a response this week. Did a search of 'ultralight' on the National Association of Flight Instructors web site - nada. Interestingly, almost all of the...

AirVenture 2022: Where have all the Ultralights gone?

Intriguing! Any more recollections? My searches so far have come up empty, and my two-seat Quick training guy prospect just dried up yesterday.
