    Is homebuilding going to vanish?

All, in 2019 I bought 8 1x8 Sitka Spruce Mast boards between 9 and 20 feet long from BoulterPlywood.com.... I spoke to the owner when I made the order and explained how I needed nice perpendicular grains. Since most of his work is with boat builders he was more than comfortable working with me...

If you could choose only 10 tools, what would they be?

I am a little surprised no one has mentioned it yet. I am building a VP1 and I find my 2 most useful tools have been my Dremel with lots of shaping bits and my 13" planer

Aircraft for the common man, homebuilt or kit....

Since I am building one - my vote is for the VP-1. It has a large builder community to help interpret plans and find materials.

I am a little surprised no one has mentioned the Gossamer Condor or Gossamer Albatross in this thread yet.

New Member Intro & First Build Questions

Not wanting to add (much) to your confusion but I would recommend looking through the EAA builder's log site to see who is building like aircraft. Contact them and see what they like and dislike. Maybe even visit. EAABuildersLog.org - Free aircraft builders log website.

Buying a salvage aircraft and crossing the border with it.

LittleBird, We did it this past month with our Enhanced Driver's Licenses and Arrive Canada receipts. Getting into Canada was easy. Getting back into the USA with our EDL's were also easy - it was the "What is that on the trailer?" part that made the junior Border Agents nervous. No one opened...

Buying a salvage aircraft and crossing the border with it.

All, an update on my planned trip from Canada to the USA with an incomplete aircraft. 1. towing an incomplete aircraft from Northern Quebec to Northern NY gets a lot of stares 2. trying to cross into the USA at a little used border crossing had us redirected to the larger crossing where...

    Sonerai

Little Scrapper... a minor distance issue... the Sonerai you posted is in VT not MT. I saw the aircraft about a year ago - it is a beautiful plane with outstanding workmanship.

Need help in finding some plywood

I don't know where you live but in 2019 I purchased Okoume from BoulterPlywood.com.... Boulter Plywood in Massachusetts. The do ship on the East Coast. I have cut every piece for my VP1 build and found every piece to be void free and high quality. Shipping came sandwiched in 1/2 inch birch ply...

Buying a salvage aircraft and crossing the border with it.

Hello everyone, I came upon this old thread and I am hoping someone has some up to date information. I plan on buying a "70% complete project" in Canada and bringing it into the USA. Once the border opens back up. It has no "N" number as it was never complete. I do not plan on completing this...

    CNC Ribs

RTFM, Fritz shared the CNC files with the Volksplane Group and I used 1/4 inch Mahogany AC/Marine plywood from Boulter Plywood in Mass. Not a CNC issue but they also had the Sitka Spruce in 20' lengths.

    CNC Ribs

Hello All, I agree with Vigilant1 that a co-op "Makerspace" is a viable alternative. These are usually connected to Colleges and Universities with Community involvement programs. In my area RPI developed such a space in Troy, NY that I was able to "buy" an expert's assistance. I could have...

What did you do on your airplane project today?

Another Volksplane Builder put together the DXF files and shared them on the Volksplane builder's group. A local University set up an Entrepreneur Shop space with shared equipment (Maker Spaces) . I approached the CNC instructor, hoping a student that may want to try this and I got lucky that...

What did you do on your airplane project today?

Today I picked up the wing ribs, Stab ribs and Rudder ribs (VP1) that a local shop cut for me on a CNC. I feel like I got an airplane model for Christmas.

    New aspiring pilot.

Hello Tristan, I am a retired Navy pilot. Be very careful when researching what your GI bill will pay for in regards to flight training. Contact the VA first. In most cases the GI bill only pays for training towards future employment.

Aluminium spot welding for the Homebuilder?

All, I did a search for "welding" and this is the closest forum topic to my question. Has anyone tried this on low stress aluminum parts? Solution Welding Flux-Cored Rods Welding with a propane torch seems to fit the too good to be true category.

What did you do on your airplane project today?

So on my Volksplane 1 (VP-1) over the weekend I trimmed the side skins and did a "test fit" with the longerons and side skins to the cockpit. A dremel does wonders to take a few millimeters of glue and slight differences off to make everything a snug fit. Next week I glue the sides in place.
