Leading edge being soaked in Ammonia? why Ammonia?

That is true. The effect, though, continues after the part is removed from that atmosphere. How much ammonia gets in it by being exposed to ammonia gas versus being saturated with dilute ammonia? I don't know, and I don't have a few decades I want to spend testing it to find out.

Leading edge being soaked in Ammonia? why Ammonia?

A violin maker of my acquaintance says that the old practice of artificially aging wood using ammonia causes it to continue to break down over a period of years, until after a few decades it is as weak as cardboard. I'd be really hesitant to introduce ammonia into an wooden aircraft's structure.

    Rotax in the News

What makes it a "nightmare" that they can produce identical engines? It's not like Rotax engines are particularly technologically advanced; even if they had to do the R&D themselves, and they could, the Chinese could produce a similar quality engine cheaper anyway. At worst, it means that a...

    Laser cut wood airplane

I'm fortunate to have received a laser cutter for Christmas, after a bit of hinting. Its abilities are pretty impressive. I intend to try some different ways of preparing the surface on some test joints, to see what it would take to use it to cut things like rib nosepieces where you have to make...

    Sitka spruce substitute

Yes, I realize now that I'm calling a sliding compound miter saw a radial arm saw. I hadn't realized there was a difference.

Where are you seeing radial arm saws being nonexistent new? I see multiple models for sale at the big box stores.

    Laser cut wood airplane

Wasn't RTFM doing something like that with his Flea-inspired design? I haven't seen any updates for a while, but as I recall a lot of the structure was CNC-cut plywood.

    Kimbrel Banty group.

I think everyone agrees that Facebook is not ideal in a lot of ways. On the other hand, when you're faced with a person who is doing something to encourage and inform builders of a really sweet design, you could spend too much time criticizing his choice of platform.

    Parts Wanted HBA Member SCAM

I'm really sorry that I didn't make a post when that same pair of addresses came up for me. I figured it was the standard scam and ignored it, but I should have said something.

Starter Part 103 for a beginner on a budget

I think most people are concerned less with what's legal than with what's enforced — a lot like we treat the speed limit: 55 and under is legal, but few cops will stop you for less than about 65. Similarly, people's experience with FAA enforcement suggests that the recovery system won't be...

Roger Mann is building a new, affordable Ragwing ultralight.

I'm excited about it too. Only thing is, on Facebook I can ask him directly if I have a question, and I can see all of his pictures, so I've mostly been following it there. It's one of the few times I've preferred Facebook to this forum.

    Aerofoil layout

I wrote a Python tool to generate NACA airfoils, and was frustrated when checking it against Xfoil — until I realized that Xfoil does not generate NACA airfoils correctly. It applies the thickness perpendicular to the chord line instead of the mean line. I didn't know the internals of Xfoil...
