What is your interest and/or experience with homebuilt airplanes?

I was building a Fisher Celebrity back in the early 1990s, but sold the framework to someone who felt it would fill their needs and desires better than it would mine. I got a certified antique biplane later on, and then purchased a Glasair 1 TD which I have flown about 450 hours. More recent I...

Aeronca C3 modern-replica or or something like that.

I really like the K, and If anybody wants to rebuild an Aeronca K, I have a couple of projects including the E-113 engine. I am realizing that I am more of a flyer than a rebuilder... I've flown a C-3 and it was delightful...

    Lincoln Sport Bi-Plane Plans

A few years ago I saw two Lincoln Sports at Eagles Mere, a private airport in Pennsylvania. One was powered by a three cylinder engine, I think it was an Anzani, but it may have been a Sekely (don’t remember the spelling of that one.) The other one was powered by a nine cylinder Salmson radial...

Why does the Cub have jury struts?

Most skydivers I know are deathly afraid of engine or aircraft system failures. That has been reduced somewhat since so many jump ships are now turbine powered. But in the days when they were radial engine powered almost everyone breathed a sigh of relief when they finally got enough altitude to...

Headsets - brands, tips, recommendations, etc.

I have had durability issues with the Clarity Aloft headset, but I found them useful in two particular tailwheel airplanes where I have a better view around the nose on the ground because I can put my head up against the side of the canopy closer than when I use my Bose. If helps me on narrow...

There is an airworthy Buhl Pup at Poplar grove. Someone in that community might be able to find out.

Help me make a list of airplanes I’d like

Sharp eyes. Didn't think anyone would notice. Slow progress. KT-125 with15.5/13.5 foot wings top and bottom, short fuselage... Not my smartest idea to get tangled up in this one...

Help me make a list of airplanes I’d like

I love the Shoestring. I bought a project a few years ago which is sitting while other projects are getting attention. I have everything but the wing. The plans have an incorrect angle of incidence on the stab which will cause issues if it isn’t corrected. No plans are available, and the only...

Is wearing a personal chute with a bail-out system acceptably safe compared to an airframe chute?

I have been a pilot for about 40 years, and a skydiver for a little more than that. For 36 years I have also been a parachute designer, test jumper, and manufacturer. I have had several skydiver friends who also were jump pilots and a handful of them had to leave a "perfectly good airplane that...

    Taylor Titch Anniversary

I am Six foot two and I have about 80 hours in my Taylor Mono. It is narrow in the shoulders, but otherwise I fit snugly but fine. Getting in and out is a slow process... My rump doesn't hit the fuselage bottom and I have to sit on a cushion to see out very well. My head head just clears the canopy.

    What??? No handheld radio???

There was an airplane repo episode that involved the repo of a Twin Otter from a skydiving center-- one that I was familiar with. The star of the show and a pilot snuck around, broke into the airplane and took off. I was surprised that the DZ owner even had a note on teh airplane, let alone not...

    Plans format preferences and pricing

I bought the Druine Turbi Plans from Manna Aviation, the folks that bought the other designs from Falconair that you didn't buy. It was received from Australia in a downloadable format, and I took the file to a local printer to get paper copies. Way less expensive that shipping paper from...

Do you think we are using the right wing length for most aircraft?

I have had the opportunity to experiment with adding wingtip extensions on my Glasair. (Actually I did the reverse, since I first flew it a couple of hundred hours with the extensions before removing them for about 15 hours.) Most of the changes were as I would have expected, though a few were...
