    Tack welding 4130

Perhaps if the guy with the Tig welder is a friend, he might bring his Tig over and show you how to make Tack welds with it. Very simple to do and will prevent you from "blowing thru" which is pretty certain to happen some with a stick welder. Then you have to try to fill larger voids here and...

Rik, You can't get 200 HP at 2700 rpms with 5.3 (appx 327 cu in) of naturally aspirated displacement. The powdered metal rods are fine strength wise but doubt they will fit if someone strokes the engine to 4.000/4.100 inches. I do not know of anyone who makes a 4.000/4.100 stroke LS...

Rik, either you are misreading some of what I wrote or I didn't explain it well enough. Not mandating a cast iron block. Just saying that when you select a 5.3 liter LS engine, the biggest majority of them that can be found in junkyards will be cast iron and therefore NOT suitable for aviation...

I think someone told me that GM had finally stopped making OEM smallblock Chevys last year. Got 3 350 cores in my shed.......... along with some LS cores. Sorry Charlie, but I'm not one of the younger guys. My son helped me get exposed to electronic fuel injection. I think the biggest problem...

    Torque King Chevy Smallblock

Have you considered mimicing the newer coil on plug systems where you use 8 individual coils and a trigger wheel? Then simply use a duplicate ignition box for backup. You are going to have some plurality even if you go with the dual plug set up. Probably a lot easier and just as reliable...

Glad you are the one who said it. I agree 100% . I would make provision for a secondary backup on a few of the components but doubt it would really ever be needed. That said, if a builder just doesn't want to go that route, the smallblock is a decent second choice.

What you say about people using the 4.8/5.3 (with a turbo) to make insane HP is true. The problem with using them for an airplane is that you would be looking at a cast iron block( LM4 & L33 excepted) and the additional weight of a turbo. Also, the turbo needs rpms to add boost, so at a lower...

I made them large because I thought if someone saved them to a file on their computer they might get more detail. I hate it when I download something and its so small that I can't see it well and sometimes can't enlarge it either.

I agree with what Robert said, but don't think an automotive machine shop with a line boring machine could get the cutting tool large enough to bore a bellhousing hole. The housing could be mounted and indicated to see how much runout it has and marked to show how much it needed to be cut...

I saw that show where they tested different oil pans and was surprised at the power loss. The thing I'd point out here is that they lost that HP while turning high rpms (7000 ?) rather than 2700 or less, so I would expect far less power loss. I'm not sure an engine would lose any more power...

    Torque King Chevy Smallblock

Torque King 3 OK, here are examples of how much power someone can build into a smallblock Chevy and what parts were used. Thought this might be helpful for anyone reconsidering a smallblock. Basically this same stuff should generally apply to most engines with equal...

I'm posting this as a reference due to conversation on another thread. Let me get all 29 pictures on probably 3 posts before commenting to insure better continuity. My understanding is that there is now an ALUMINUM smallblock available for a price comparable to LS engines. Torque King 1

There is nothing wrong with using an Aluminum smallblock, didn't mean to imply that. The problem in the past was that you could not get an aluminum block for one of them unless you spent more than $4K......usually quite a bit more. At that time an LS1 block really inexpensive and an LS3 was...

Good post. Here it is again with highlights. Notice that fit is tight or very close but that there is room for some wear. I do think a couple of the tolerances are unrealistic......especially at individual A&P/IA field sites. A .000 fit .....just what is that? And the .0002 fit for the...

I'll attach an exploded view of a GO-300 gear box and a picture of the splined crankshaft that it attaches to. I can't find my picture of the actual shaft they used but it was not as robust as a typical car/truck axle. Pressing the shaft into the splined hole would probably work, but there...

Simplicity and reliability are what I would strive for. Whitman showed that a simple direct drive works well and is reliable. As for the axle selected, I would purchase a new one from Moser or Currie. I say this because you really don't know what stresses may have been placed on a used axle...

    Buick 215 Trans bolt pattern

Actually the C5 Housing doesn't bolt to a transmission but to a tube and the transmission is at the rear of the car. The Housing has 5 attachment points instead of 4 normally found on a housing. The attachment points do not appear to be as substantial as most other OEM housings, but I think it...
