    Drone Question

My mother got me started when I was 5 and a Guillows Sopwith Camel. I too prefer balsa. And carpenters glue. No CA for me.

    Drone Question

Formal Teaching is another matter and I don't recall the details well enough to comment. I don't have a 107 and have no interest in it. So I haven't kept up on it's requirements. That said, for recreational aircraft weighing between .55 - 55 pounds the pilot must be registered and his number...

    Drone Question

Beg to differ. A number of years ago I was involved in an experiment to determine just how far away an RC model could be and still be seen well enough to be controlled. The model used was a .40 sized trainer with a 60 inch wing span. Our conclusion was that for the typical model then flown, a...

    Drone Question

But don't you plan to fly commercial? Hence the license? Part 107 is different and I can see where each drone must be registered. But for recreational flying, not 107 it's the owner/pilot who registers and uses the same number on all his sUAS. Two different worlds here that need to be kept...

    Drone Question

It is interesting. I think it is due in part to too much information being let out before things were finalized. Or at least in a good draft. People took comments like "We're looking into..." and "We might...." and took them as Gospel. Not to mention the AMA on occasion flat out lying to the...

    Drone Question

Control line IS included. The FAA was asked this very question a year or more ago for a Presidential visit to Florida. And they said everything even control line.

    Drone Question

However should for some reason the FAA issue issue a NOTAM grounding everything in a certain area, that includes free flight, control line AND model rockets. Most common is when AF-1 goes somewhere. There was an incident last year (or maybe the year before) where some idiot flew his drone...

    Drone Question

Sorry but That is 100% WRONG. That's Propaganda put out by the AMA in an effort to swell their ranks (because fiscally, they're in bad shape). You do have to follow an approved set of safety rules and most, like me simply copy what the AMA uses. But I for one have not been a member of the AMA...

    Drone Question

The Drone does not get registered. The owner/pilot does. And it's the owner/pilots number that must be displayed somewhere on the outside of the drone. The FAA hasn't a clue how many "Drones" I have or what types. Nor I believe do they care. I can only fly one at a time. But all of them...

Totally new type of IC engine.

The RCV engines had cooling issues. Novel idea but.................. I'd be interested in hearing what other RC model engines you might have and if any are for sale. I have a modest collection and am always on the lookout for something new.

    B-52 Sighting

Back in the 90's I went to the show at Andrews AFB, MD. They had 3 generations of one family that had flown as Command Pilots in the Buff on display. All 3 of them were there. At least, that's what they told us.

    B-52 Sighting

20 years AF here and as far as I know the BUFF still goes to Kelly Field in San Antonio for upgrades (or whatever they're calling Kelly now). Deployed to Morocco for an exercise we had a Buff go low over our compound, maybe 150 to 200 feet with the bomb bay doors open. It was empty but what an...

RC prop Help a first time builder

Just a thought but have you considered building the dummy prop like a wing? Ribs etc to get the profile right? Fill with foam and shape then glass? And since you have a duplicator you really only need one blade and dup it for both of the real ones. Or am I talking through my hat? :)

RC prop Help a first time builder

As a modeler I just want to say the bunch here are far and away smarter and nicer than most you find on the dedicated model forums. Good crew here!

China's large solar-powered, near-space UAV makes maiden flight

HAPS in the video looks a lot like Helios which NASA flew some 30 or so years ago. Helios set an altitude record and an endurance record. I don't recall how long it stayed up but it did at least several weeks and was designed to stay up for months at a time. And it went higher than the SR-71...

Proposal would give UAS (drones) right of way over all aircraft

As a life long recreational RC modeler (some 55 years now), I fully agree with a caveat. Whatever system is approved it needs to be small and light for model use. Incorporated into the new radios is probably the best way but there are a lot of old systems still in use. I myself have a 40 year...

A couple of visitors to KSLE

Nothing really. Just one of those little odd historical facts most people don't know about nor care. And you're right, Michigan got the UP out of the deal and has been bilking tourists with it ever since.

    Putting Lipstick on a ---?

The Air Zoo in Kalamazoo Michigan has a P-40 with lipstick and makeup. Here's a pic and link. Link Can't see in this pic but the eye has long lashes and mascara. The color is pink vice desert tan. The owner, a woman of course had a hand in starting this museum some 40 plus years ago...

A couple of visitors to KSLE

Actually Toledo originally belonged to Michigan. Around 1835 the state of Ohio stole it from the territory of Michigan.

Is it a bird? Is it a Plane? Is it a Helicopter? Nope - I'm building one of those new drone thingy's!

Ha! Ha! Murphy and I are old friends. Then again there's always the KISS principle. Do I have to spell it out? And as Burt Rutan would say, “the technology you leave out cannot fail you.”
