The state of our (dying) sport 2022

It's profitability, .. or the lack of .. "spending a few hours shaping (whatever) .." those hours, .. who's going to be paying for them? A hobbyist is absorbing the cost, knowingly, or not knowingly, .. or doesn't care. These technologies are a tightening noose. The original, breakthrough...

    Boeing following Mac Doug

An idea that comes to mind, when observing conversations, like this .. whether it's an airplane manufacturer, or a car company, .. or, you name it .. there's dangers when one thinks that they've become too clever, to fail. There's alot of "clever" people, these days.

    Why Spruce ?

I knew I was forgetting something .. this being from AC43.13-2A - Acceptable Methods, etc. There's speak of Western Hemlock.

    Why Spruce ?

A bat to a wall, versus a wing spar being put into high G's? I don't know if that's completely apples to apples. I've worked with clear pine, and Douglas fir, .. Sitka Spruce, not at all. Cracked open this publication "Wood" .. I believe this is a collection of Sport Aviation magazine articles...

    Why Spruce ?

The EAA's "Wood" is a good guide. In this, they spell out different woods, that can used. Spruce being the most attractive choice. But, also Douglas Fir, and clear white pine.

15% ethanol to be allowed in "normal" auto fuel?

Not sure, .. maybe I've mentioned this before, here? Please pardon, if that's the case. Somebody else, mentioned above, in this thread .. and I agree, the political pressures, on those in elected office, .. well, for those in any kind of office, .. for going "green" / combating "global warming"...

Is the W8 Tailwind wide enough for

I went over & visited Steve, mmm, .. around year '88, or '89. He was taller than me (me = 6'-1") .. I would guess by a couple of inches. And he had me get in his Olds powered Tailwind .. and he had to coach me, in the technique of getting into it. .. :) It was cozy, .. and there wasn't anyone...

EAA - For better or worse

Let's say, you are in the position of controlling the amount of money being infused into our economic system. So, you go about it in way, that the currency devalues. And there's quite a few measuring sticks to use, .. to analyze your handiwork. Pick a couple .. and, though they don't track 1 for...

Toobuilder .. thanks for the share.

Hey - why is no one build Heath Parasols anymore???

Cockpit clearances .. or, the lack of it .. that is a pretty big deal. Depending on what you're committing to .. to make sure that you can insert into your dreamship, gracefully .. Example (this is probably the easiest type of design, to alter) .. I believe the Tailwind's cabin width, at the...

EAA - For better or worse

Yes, .. I was an EAA member back in the mid 80's to early 90's. In real time, even I felt, or noticed something of a shift, going on. I definitely began feeling the need to add another decimal point, to my income, to be able to get involved in the kind of builds, that Sport Aviation was...

    Model airplane construction

I recall involving my son in my project, back when .. and had him mix up some T-88. He caught a whiff, of that .. and his face said it all. I think that was last the time, for him. And that smell is probably pretty mild, to what's already mentioned. Yeah, .. if it didn't stink alot, whatever the...

    Do these welds look sufficient?

"the equipment" that's what I thought of my first welds, too .. I mean .. I read all the books.

    Boeing following Mac Doug

Man, .. that's a gorgeous magazine cover. Yes, .. the yearning going down the rows of Guillow's model planes, in the mom & pop hobby store, as a kid. And then finally having the cash to get one. Happy days.

    Boeing following Mac Doug

ooo, .. if these mentions of Boeing, are true .. yes, .. it is gloomy, so agree. But the term "gloom & doom" has this subtle opportunty for using the reasoning of "oh, it can't be as bad as all that." .. and, time will tell. To find that Boeing, (just using them as an example, for who knows how...

    Boeing following Mac Doug

Well constructed words, Todd .. IF only this just applied to Boeing, .. however, this is probably not the case. And to add to this, .. it appears as though we are more deeply loyal to the lowest priced anything, than ever. Never mind where is it was made, and possibly by slave labor, etc. .. as...

Why battery-powered aircraft will never have significant range

Wouldn't it be great to be able to convert/harvest to fuel (hydrogen?) at wind farm locations. It must not be practical, or cost effective .. and where does one go, for straight answers? How far away from sound, (and practical) are these green tech systems, from being able to produce hydrogen...

Why battery-powered aircraft will never have significant range

Yup, .. on the farm that I grew up on, .. were bits of a 32V windcharger system. It must have been a thrill, just to throw a light switch, at that time.

Why battery-powered aircraft will never have significant range

Glass sodium batteries, .. maybe that already been mentioned here? It sounds promising, .. but then .. glass, that's not light stuff, either.
