What did you do on your airplane project today?

All the post-test data reviews are complete with my dynamic scale test model. Its last official test flight two months back ended in the grass with a RH MLG strut failure (a set screw came loose). Minor damage..but fixable. All in all, 81 data flights were completed, making for about 20 flight...

    EAA flight advisor program?

My name is up with EAA National as we speak; part of our Innovation Club concept is to teach flight testing fundamentals to those who wish to do the Phase I on their new machines. I do agree with you in the respect that while there are guys out there like myself, you do not need to be some kind...

    That book is amazing!

EAA No Longer Has Free SolidWorks

I think the failure on my predecessor's part was not anticipating the labor-intensive serviceability that the Osprey ultimately required. Believe it or not, it was pitched to the customer that the only time that any panel would ever be opened was during 400-hour Phase Inspections or during heavy...

    Aerofoil layout

I would strongly suggest using the Foil Design functions of XFLR-5 (an open-source application). You can pull Selig .dat format files from www.airfoiltools.com, refine, scale and or interpolate between foil geometries as you need, analyze as you need to as well, export as .dat files, and you...

You haven't been exposed to V-22 Osprey maintenance, have you? 🤣 ...because I am convinced that maintenance was the very last thought on anybody's minds when they designed her back in the 1980's! At least we solved many of those problems on the 609 and V-280, thanks to modern parametric...

American GEM - Youth Flight training System (from Lithuanian Youth Glider)

This is terrible news of a great concept. Forgive me when I say that I only discovered this thread right now; I never knew such a concept existed. From one aviator to another, I implore you to try to keep promoting this idea; and hopefully some of us out there can find a way to continue it!

There is one we can all think of....and his initials are "PM".

EAA No Longer Has Free SolidWorks

For what it is worth, I do wish there was simply an option to "update" to the new release, instead of uninstalling/installing & re-adding all your workbenches...but it's free, so I'll make the extra effort!

Interesting. Are you running Windows, Linux or Apple OS?

    Internal aileron linkage

In 25 years of wrenching and flying aircraft, that's honestly the first time I have ever heard of a hinge pin working its way out of a piano hinge...especially those that are positively retained. Do your ailerons 'fly' correctly? Any idea of the circumstances behind it?

I was running 0.20 and came into a problem with the Add-On Manager. It listed all the available workbenches, but I was unable to open many of them (ie A2plus), let alone load them. I uninstalled what I had, loaded 0.20.1, and everything now works as advertised.

    Internal aileron linkage

All good. For what it is worth, on the V-22's I fly, the elevator has 3 hinge points, all other surfaces have just 2...and never once has there been a failure. Not even remotely close.

EAA No Longer Has Free SolidWorks

This, folks. This. A Major General (2-star) once said in a leadership development seminar: "An elite unit is one that performs all the most mundane, most basic tasks to absolute perfection" I am chomping at the bit to get going on my design...but am holding off until I know at least 95% of...

    Internal aileron linkage

I concur. From 14 CFR § 23.2300 - Flight control systems. : § 23.2300 Flight control systems. (a) The applicant must design airplane flight control systems to: (1) Operate easily, smoothly, and positively enough to allow proper performance of their functions. (2) Protect against likely...

    Electric VTOL Beta Alia

Agreed. Haven't heard of these guys until time now. They're doing their own thing, without the self-pressure of hype. Looks promising!

    Electric VTOL Beta Alia

There is a whole cadre of engineers & pilots in our eAviation unit that have been working the details of certification with both the FAA and EASA. Not being involved in it myself, my understanding is that the lack of precedent with power supply systems, ie batteries, has been a massive hurdle...
