Experimental Pilots, How do you handle insurance? (Especially for non-certified engines)

Fly naked for 5 hrs time in type at a grass field with nothing around. I had to get 5 hrs in my single seat biplane before the insurance (liability only) would cover me. I don't even have ground not in motion anymore. The only thing of value is the engine anyway. I have no idea how anyone...

    Aixro XP40 engine ?

Nice engines, a bit expensive for what they are. I think Renntech is still the US dealer. The engines are used in cart racing, so you should be able to find parts.

Oh, and ask any of them about reserves.....energy density that is orders of magnitude worse really impacts this requirement. If you have an hr of endurace...a 30 min reserve is debilitating. For hydrocarbon fuels...no big deal.

Do you really think you can charge batteries faster than fill a fuel tank practically??? really?

I'm not sure exactly what you are talking about here. I work with batteries and fuel.

I'll also say this about the original design of this aircraft. It's much more insidious than a graphic designer...The design was obviously driven by a theoretical absolutist academic. Someone I have no time for. The tell tale signs are the following: The wing tip engines are there to counteract...

Breguet Range Equation does not care how the aircraft is powered. Apparently none of the electric aviation enthusiasts know about this. Batteries in the conventional sense will never be as efficient as fuel and air for aircraft. No way around this. basic physics. Makes it hard for me to take...

I was recently at an expo involving electric flight. These people don't even understand how airplanes work. One company in particular was trying to replace the Cessna Caravan. The thing had 7K lbs of batteries. No ability to trade fuel for cargo, and no range. Recharging takes overnight. Forget...

Uhhh....I'm intimately involved in startups. There is a lot of dumb money, and most of it seems to find it's way into the aviation space for some reason. Aviation is where capital goes to die. Including mine.

Turbocharged engine options for a 2 seater - what would you consider?

Not that rich for a boosted engine. I don't think it's about cooling in a liquid cooled engine, it's about detonation margin on boost. 100LL may help, but requires dyno time to test.

What happened to the Smith Miniplane DSA-1 ??

Word has it the Smith Miniplane lands so hot and blind, no one can find it anymore.

    Cowl Exit Streamlining

Ejectors/Augmentors usually help ground and climb cooling, but hurt top speed. There are several good NACA papers out there. A fairing and nice rounded edge to a sloped exit ramp, with a variable exit flap (or two on either side) are what you need. Easier said than done...

That doesn't have anything to do with the Htail.....and the props are just as likely to fail as any other prop. Controllers fail too. Short coupled design with a long forward fuselage. Engine nacelles and wing wake, likely to block both tail surfaces at high alpha.....Tail too small....

    Aerodynamics of Propulsion

A few quick comments after looking at what you guys have been up to: Heat exchangers can share a common inlet, but they need separate ducts/outlets to solve the issues already discussed. The radiators in the P51 are archaic and terrible. They hadn't really figured out the area ratio for the...

    Aerodynamics of Propulsion

I'll try to answer some of these questions later, next week. Getting ready for a trip. Short answer: You can make almost anything work. The question is how much drag will it have. If you are trying to optimize things the details matter. One detail is inlet lip. You can make it small and cool...

    Aerodynamics of Propulsion

Off design inlet for us, just translates to external diffusion with a lower Vi/V0. You aren't going to be sucking in air....Most people who try to use this text fail to READ the book. Don't just start pulling equations and numbers off the graphs. You need to completely understand the assumptions...

    cooling fans

You can't compare Reno Racers to war planes, or anything else for that matter. They are point designs, of an already optimized design. The fastest design is no cooling at all. Cooling makes drag, no matter what you do. Even if you just heat up the surface, the boundary layer gets bigger and...
