    Hurricane Ian

I live in South St Pete near the big lake (under pattern for SPG, PIE heavies, and MacDill - except when they stay in their corridor). I work on St Pete Beach (where we evacuated all of our equipment yesterday). For some reason everybody likes to fly up, or down the beach. Probably an ego...

    Hurricane Ian

Very good possibility. Saw several USCG C-130s leaving PIE yesterday and figured they were evacuating the aircraft to a safer area. We often get "free airshows" from the 130s and CG Jayhawks, as well as Army Reserve Blackhawks and the occasional Chinook buzzing the beach. Oh, almost forgot...

Crashes in the News - Thread

Almost all of the threads on here are "cluttered". I found this out early on when looking for information. I have probably contributed myself after seeing that pretty much everybody on here does. This is what you get with a "free" source. If someone were to "moderate" and clean it up, they...

    Hurricane Ian

A tornado has already damaged at least a half dozen planes at Broward County Airport. Saw a picture on a newsfeed with a few pics of damaged planes. Flipped, one of a low wing on its side with a wing tucked under, a few piled on top of each other. Dennis

    Contra-Rotating Propellers

Every marine (outboard) gearbox 've ever worked on used gearlube. Motor oil would be too thin. You could possibly whip up some kind of cooler, maybe even a larger sump. Dennis

Crashes in the News - Thread

My story is (was) kind of the opposite. I had this Swedish ex fighter pilot for my first instructor. We'd do a little flying, I'd screw up something, he raise his squeaky accented voice, I'd tense up, and the lesson would go down hill from there. One afternoon, maybe our third flight, we were...

Briggs & Stratton 993cc "Big Block" engine conversation thread

The way we used to tell with automotive cranks was a fine casting line was a sign that they were cast. A wider rough line indicated they were forged. Been a while since I put my 16 HP Vanguard (non aviation) together, so I don't remember what it has. Dennis

    LiteFighters: P-40/P-36 and beyond

While their existing plane is a radial (what I believe he means by different engine), I believe that heir plan is to move on to a P-40 with inline engine, and eventually expand to other planes using the basic framework. Dennis

    Anybody know what this is?

Me? This wasn't mine. It is still listed on my local craigslist. This engine allegedly only has 20 hours on it (meter is included), has been "stored" for about 20 years, and is asking 250.00. I could maybe look into it for you. What parts are you specifically looking for? Dennis

I gotta wonder what kinds of problems Glenn Curtiss went through. Hope this settles it for you. Dennis

    Another nail in the coffin...?

I am painfully aware of how much everything has gone up. (well, not EVERYTHING, my limited portfolio went DOWN:() Real estate: down here, due dilligence means let the other guy buy it. Almost everything gets listed for XXX dollars, then sells for much higher than the listing. RENTING a place...

    Wing attach bolts in tension

    1. Are there actually AN (aviation) TTY bolts? 2. Because we're SUPPOSED to be talking about wing attach bolts here, how tight are they really supposed to be? 3. Back to wing attach bolts, are we talking about a "one time attachment" (like a regular spam can would have)? or are we talking about...

    Wing attach bolts in tension

No. I really didn't overtighten it THAT much. I definitely don't feel I tightened them enough to stretch the bolts. Besides, this was years ago. Dennis
