    Murphy Yukon or Alternative

I can give you an accurate idea of costs and also how much time it will take to build. I can tell you upfront that a Bearhawk or Murphy Tundra done right with 390 or 540 with a Skyview or Garmin panel will cost as much as you can find a Cessna 180 would be. Remember you will be hauling your wife...

    Murphy Yukon or Alternative

John, I can't figure out how to send a PM so I'll just post. I'm a highly experienced builder ( Four Supercubs, two RV7s. Zenith 750 and major parts of several other homebuilts plus restored two Nanchang CJ6s, a SNJ and three Tbm Avengers. I fly a Murphy Moose with the M-14P and helped build it...

    Rib stitching alternative

If you are going to glue the fabric and not rib stitch use Airtech or Superflte. Put two coats of glue everywhere the fabric is going to stick. When you cover just glue the fabric around the perimete like normal and then shrink like normal. Now you can iron down the fabric over the ribs then one...

    Rib stitching alternative

Just did a Supercub with rivets and it was very easy. They are large head 1/8" rivets and you can get them from Spruce. Called Maule rivets or fabric revets.

    Are you a pilot and/or a homebuilder?

I'm both. I have been restoring (SNJ, TBM3 and CJ6) and homebuilding (RV7, Backcountry Super Cub, Glasstar, Hornet and a few others I helped on) for over 30 years. I am finishing another RV7 and will be doing the fabric and firewall forward on another Backcountry Cub. I do get in over 100hrs a...

    Smith Kit Supercub....

Nick, this was one of your kits done before the sale to TCOW. There were several issues mainly the wing incidence and horizontal stab rear mount was too low. This was the same problem on several of your early kits built in Southern Idaho by friends of mine. The early TCOW fuselage has the same...

Ready to pull the trigger on a Sonex, unless you talk me out of it.(Newbie Questions)

Re: Ready to pull the trigger on a Sonex, unless you talk me out of it.(Newbie Questi I don't understand the big deal about where the stick/yoke is. It doesn't take any time at all to get used to using either hand or sitting in either seat it just takes trying it. I fly a lot of different...

    High powered/performance STOL LSA aircraft

What do you want to use your STOL/LSA airplane for? If it is for gee wiz take off performance to amuse yourself or your friends it is one thing but a usable airplane is another. Look at your example Carbon Cub. It has great take off performance but unless you and your passenger are lightweights...

Ready to pull the trigger on a Sonex, unless you talk me out of it.(Newbie Questions)

Re: Ready to pull the trigger on a Sonex, unless you talk me out of it.(Newbie Questi The Aero Vee and Jabiru have a proven track record and have everything available firewall forward. With the Corvair your on your own. If the basic Corvair weighs even a pound more than the other two engine run...

    Cheepest intercom system?

HEADS UP! Just looked on Ebay and there is a Sigtronics intercom with two H10-40 Clark headsets that end in 3 hours. So far high bid is $172.00. Get on it as is a perfect set up for you. Don

    Cheepest intercom system?

Look on Ebay. You can usually find a Sigtronics portable for around $100. Good intercom system. Also you can usually find David Clark H10-40 headsets for about $100 also. Great combination. Nothing worse than a cheap intercom that doesn't work worth a ****. Don

    Smith Kit Supercub....

Backcountry Supercub who bought Smith improved the airplane especially the welded items like the fuselage. I finished mine in March and it is a great performer. We have 5 cubs going together here One Smith, one early TCOW/Backsountry and three later TCOW/Backcountry. The Smith and early TCOW are...

Ready to pull the trigger on a Sonex, unless you talk me out of it.(Newbie Questions)

Re: Ready to pull the trigger on a Sonex, unless you talk me out of it.(Newbie Questi The Sonex is a good airplane and a good first project. I would STONGLY suggest that you go with the Aero Vee or Jabiru engine. They are well tested and reliable engines. The 120hp Jabiru 3300 would be a great...

    First flight/test flight period...

Do yourself a favor and stay over the top of the runway at 2-3000' on your first flight just in case you have a problem. Also be aware that you are flying a high drag airplane and the glide angle is going to be very steep so keep that in mind. And once again be very very careful with the...

Help me review etiquette for flying with no radio...

Standard test radius is 25nm-50nm but it is up the the inspector. Also it is 25hr for a EAB with a certified engine and prop 40hr with a non-certified engine OR prop. ELSA is a 5 or 10 hour test period. My Nanchang CJ6 experimental exhibition was a 5hr test period 25nm radius. My RV7 with a hot...

    First flight/test flight period...

I second Bruce's comment on high speed taxi tests. A lot of new airplanes have been wrecked doing this. I have 9 initial test flights and 10 or so post restoration flights. I do some medium speed taxi's to burn in the brakes and make sure it goes straight. For first flight I take off and climb...

    Short field landing technique

I didn't say it should be taught to a student for the check ride but should be taught as another skill and the time and reason for using the technique. Some of you have it in your head that it is somehow dangerous and not showing good piloting skills. It is also something that needs to be...

March and April 2011 - Tell us what you've done this month!

Finished the Backcountry Super Cub build had the inspection and did the first test flight 3/12/11. That is #8 first test flights I have done. Everything worked great and I now have 20+hrs on it. Finished assembling the engine on my RV7 and got it back in the air 4/30/11. Runs great so far and...

    Short field landing technique

Let's take my Cub for example. Power off full flap stall speed is 45mph indicated. Back of the power curve with some power is 38mph. For a full flap power off steep approach I have to use about 55mph so I have enough energy to flare. I can fly the behind the power curve approach at 45 indicated...
