What did you do on your airplane project today?

I started finishing on my dynamically scaled test model earlier today. Sanded for three hours straight...only a couple low spots remaining!!

    Homebuilt Aircraft Formulas

This book and whitepaper have been invaluable in the development of my 25% scale test model. Lots of info for dynamic scaling!

    Amen, brother!

What did you do on your airplane project today?

In my [not so] old military aviation days, I always saw wire bundles tied and not zip-tied. I asked our avionics guys, and they told me that this technique is preferred in high-vibration environments, such as the helicopters I flew, as zip ties, according to them, have come loose, especially...

What did you do on your airplane project today?

I installed the wings to my proof of concept test model for a fit check yesterday evening. It was my first-ever true look at my machine in the physical form! Next tasks...finishing and installing the motor mount structure!!

    Why don’t airports have scales?

I would reply to the post above, but its appears that the OP cannot, has not, and will not get it, despite our best attempts to teach otherwise. One can lead a horse to water.... I'm bailing out on this one, fam!

    Why don’t airports have scales?

Agreed. I have had several conversations with Pilot-34 on several aircraft subjects, and I am fearful I am not getting through, because I, like many of us, are only trying to assist and educate. You can lead a horse to water, but...

    Why don’t airports have scales?

Seriously? Do you honestly think we don't do this before we fly, or when maintenance is done? If you honestly believe this, you will not go far in this community. You mentioned in the PM convo we had that you had read the FAA W-B manual several times, so I find myself wondering how you can be...

    Why don’t airports have scales?

We had those in the military, and we have basic sheets like that at work, but we still have to run the calcs through the FMS. Gotta love Part 121 and company SOPs!

    Why don’t airports have scales?

I must have been flying unusual aircraft all my life. I have full copies of the Operators Manuals for the military aircraft I flew (Sikorsky H-60 & Bell-Boeing V-22) and a copy of my current work ride (Boeing 737-800 series) with rather extensive weight & balance chapters...ALL with varying...

    Why don’t airports have scales?

Can you explain what good external CG envelope marking would do? Engineers worry about the exact center of mass for stability and control computations. You do not need to worry about the vertical balance point, and you only need to worry about lateral (across the wings) balance of you have...

    Why don’t airports have scales?

Have you even operated an aircraft before? You are SUPPOSED to verify weight/balance before every flight. But, I'm just an airline pilot, aeronautical engineer AND A&P, so I could be wrong!

    Why don’t airports have scales?

Wrong. Dead wrong. You obviously know little to nothing about aircraft weight and balance. Go to www.faa.gov, and download FAA-H-8083-1 (Weight and Balance Handbook). Educate yourself. Please. Your life WILL depend on it.

What did you do on your airplane project today?

Well, glassing is all done with my test model; worked on the fillets and contouring on the canopy/engine cowling plug. I hate bondo, but since its the plug, it'll work. First time seeing what she looks like with it on!! Looks good! The duct tape is temporary- the plug will be removed so the...

    Hardware & Material Suppliers

I miss the place... the closest RK to here is in Muscle Shoals, AL. Not exactly the Houston area! One of the few places you could get livestock, ammunition, car batteries, wiring, hardware, firearms, work clothing and home decor under the same roof!

    Dream workshop?

My ideal workshop would be big enough to cover the footprint of my aircraft design twice. This would allow enough space to have the aircraft in its fully assembled form, plus enough area for tools, fabrication and storage. So, a T-hangar or similar would do the trick...at least for me!

    Spar cap material

I am pretty sure that @Primaris22 is just trying to get input; I didn't interpret his RFI as a declaration of using an alternate material... All that being said, this shortage is news to us here; my business partner is in the process of checking with respective suppliers to see if this is a...

    Hardware & Material Suppliers

Rural King is awesome! There was one down the way when I lived in Clarksville, TN; they have a supply of fasteners and other hardware as well. I don't think it has been mentioned, but Fiberglass Supply Co. is pretty good as well (www.fiberglasssupply.com); if they don't got it (composites-wise)...
