The Lightest Electric Starter for Rotax 2 strokes - M5 Aviation Products

It wouldn't be too difficult to design one but I need to get hold of an engine!

The Lightest Electric Starter for Rotax 2 strokes - M5 Aviation Products

Not the M5 sadly! Maybe we should look at the Polini as a possible new customer; there are plenty of them about...

The Lightest Electric Starter for Rotax 2 strokes - M5 Aviation Products

Hi, total weight is 6lbs 12oz. Not sure what the ring gear weighs (but I have one somewhere!). This is lighter than the Rotax starter. Whether it's an upgrade is a bit subjective I guess but it does mean effortless starting with an excess of revs to provide max voltage from the magneto for CDI...

The Lightest Starter for Rotax 2-Strokes

Hi Woody, it simply replaces the recoil start unit, it's no deeper, and the motor lies alongside the crankcase. No different mount required. See these pics. You can choose where you orient the motor, simply download the full size backplate template, offer it up to suit your application and mark...

Man Gets Molten Metal in His Ear in Freak Welding Accident

In Victorian England, there was a notorious murder; a guy killed his wife by drugging her and then pouring a small amount of molten lead in her ear, via an ear trumpet. She was buried after the coroner said she had died of natural causes, but the detective on the case wasn't satisfied and...

The Lightest Electric Starter for Rotax 2 strokes - M5 Aviation Products

Mmm! Not really, I'm afraid (well I don't know, that is). Looks like it might have been a starter from a small industrial engine perhaps?

A friend of mine in, here in the UK has built this Sub-70Kg version of the Flea. It flies beautifully.

The Lightest Electric Starter for Rotax 2 strokes - M5 Aviation Products

I designed the original M4 Starter back in 1993, quite a few are still operating just fine but I do provide a repair service for them as well as manufacturing the new M5 Starter which is a natural progression from the M4, using modern manufacturing techniques and bearings etc. This starter...

The Lightest Starter for Rotax 2-Strokes

It should do, but I've never fitted one to a 277. Basically it replaces the Recoil Start assembly and the cup which is bolted to the flywheel. The majority of Rotax 2T motors use the same set up. If you can compare the crankcase arrangement (Mag flywheel/Recoil unit) with a 377/447 and it's the...

The Lightest Starter for Rotax 2-Strokes

Yep, glad you are enjoying it Gerry  If anyone is interested 'over there' - its £485 or $678. The last one delivered to the US cost $730 including carriage from memory. The only alternative apart from the original (stick out the back) Rotax starter (heavier) is the GPL which weighs 12lbs...

The Lightest Starter for Rotax 2-Strokes

Here's a couple of photos of the M5 Starter, 6 3/4 lbs, takes up no more room than the recoil start. This one's going on a 503 engined Minimax 1600R.

    "new" Mikuni fuel pump plumbing

Ah, having seen it I get that! However, centre (vertical) outlet must be for the pulse pipe?

    "new" Mikuni fuel pump plumbing

You have a twin carb pump. If you are running a single carb, simply fit a short length of fuel pipe and plug the second outlet (I used a short bolt and pipe clamp, the thread makes for a good grip when clamped). It's a higher output pump. Hope this helps :pilot:

Minimax engine swap 503 for 447

I appreciate the comments, but firstly the Seadoo is a simple bendix type, the same as the original Rotax starter. Both need to stick out of the back of the motor. The M5 is a development of the M4 which I designed in 1993 along with a guy called Don Law. I repaired an M4 the other day, it was...

Minimax engine swap 503 for 447

Ah ok. I have a 'Max too (as you can see!) but the motor is enclosed and upright. Due to the width of the fuselage, that configuration requires a chunk of the inner skin removing (it's non-structural at that point). I've attached a couple I've attached a pdf of the backplate, which I normally...
