Cassutt - looking for anyone who knows anything about it

I've seen a red biplane once or twice but it's been a while back.

    Small Continental Prop Hub Removal

Yup. The "trick" is a strategically placed light tap with a lead or aluminum hammer. This article from vintage a/c magazine shows where the tap is used. This same technique is widely used on machine tools where 'locking' tapers are commonplace. A light tap unseats the taper for removal...

    Hauling Suggestion Needed

I have found construction styrofoam from the box store is good for packing. Otherwise, go to harbor freight and buy 10-20 moving blankets.

    Lycoming cam wear power loss

Wow, .150" of intake valve lift on 2 cylinders. That had to been around 1/2 of original. I'd say you had maybe ~80% of the rated power available. Very misleading because the engine still runs smooth.

Crashes in the News - Thread

Hey Derswede, sorry to hear about this. Please post any update you hear about the crash. I know some back history on that plane, it was fished out of a hangar in Port Huron, MI after sitting idle for roughly 10 yrs, returned to flying condition and passed off to a broker in Indy who had it...

    automotive paints, anyone?

I've sprayed some aluminum parts and fiberglass (cowl, doors, etc) with auto (Valspar) base coat / 2K clear coat, only the clear is catalyzed and it looks great, equal to the Imron it replaced. Seems to be holding up fine. Airlines have been using base coat / clear coat for several yrs now.

    10/23 Raptor Video

If you flew as a participant in the event, yes, they will expect 100% compliance with all applicable rules and regulations. However, if you are there as a spectator the FAA has specific guidance to not conduct compliance inspections on spectator airmen and aircraft. Ref: FAA 8900.1 para...

    PolyFiber minimums

I don't think you'll be happy putting paint, or polytone over brushed on polybrush. You can reduce polybrush and spray it. It comes out smooth - no bumps to show through the finish.

    differences in Dacron

The fabric is we use to cover planes is generically known as polyester. Chemist call it polyethylene terephthalate (PET). Dacron is a trademarked name that belongs to DuPont. If you have Dacron, that just means DuPont made it. It's still PET. Ceconite is also PET. Like DuPont, the company...

Ultralight or wait to see if the FAA makes changes in the next few years that will allow me to fly again?

What does law school teach about representing yourself? You may want to get a second legal opinion on your interpretation. According to the FAA, a medical application can't remain in deferred status forever. Once the time period passed (usually 30 days) and requested additional info was not...

Crashes in the News - Thread

To have enough fuel to get to FL it was likely overweight and at (if not exceeding) the aft limit. That would make for marginal pitch stability; i.e. hard to maintain altitude. Oh, acceleration and turn after entering the clouds? Perfect setup for spatial disorientation. Based on the com...
