I'm not able to open attachments, is there some trick to it in the settings? Edit: Never mind, I tried another browser and it works fine. <shrug>

    CriCri MC-15 in NZ

Hey Shannon. Haven't been in here for about 3 years, good to see you're still plugging away at it. I actually sailed from Newcastle NSW to Lyttleton (via Lord Howe, Nelson, through French Pass and down the coast) at the end of 2013 due to a friend needing crew at the last minute but forgot to...

John Roncz: The inside story about Rutan designs

At $1875 per side no-one in their right mind would build the version with the carbon wing spar. The original GU airfoil with vortex generators is far cheaper. No they are not. I have all that data, and have had it for over ten years. Dan hasn't done the drawings of the metal parts included...

John Roncz: The inside story about Rutan designs

Wouldn't use this link. It begins displaying the document immediately and locks up my browser. Very stupid site indeed. The spreadsheet and all articles are available here: https://rtfmaero.wordpress.com/library/downloads/

Re: tell me about composites to make planes from please !anything and everything poss I'm not really interested in them. Sorry.

tell me about composites to make planes from please !anything and everything possible

Re: tell me about composites to make planes from please !anything and everything poss Being a yachtie, I wouldn't even consider a powerboat to be in the same category. So I can see how some glider aficionados would be miffed by my statements above. In fact we call them "stinkboats".

John Roncz: The inside story about Rutan designs

Where there's a will, there's relatives. As I found out last week (don't ask). No way you could build a Quickie from the publicly available info, it was a kit and many parts weren't documented. So you'd need to have an original kit to copy, which kinda defeats the whole idea. There are a few...

tell me about composites to make planes from please !anything and everything possible

Re: tell me about composites to make planes from please !anything and everything poss Hell, that's what I meant to say. Yes, a glider is an aircraft but not an airplane. (To self) How do you rate your embarrassment? A. High. B. Hello there. C. Good evening.

tell me about composites to make planes from please !anything and everything possible

Re: tell me about composites to make planes from please !anything and everything poss He was working with composites earlier when he was with Jim Bede, but he did occasionally consult Fred Jiran. First composite part was announced in Canard Pusher #3 of Jan 1975, the VariViggen's new SP main...

tell me about composites to make planes from please !anything and everything possible

Re: tell me about composites to make planes from please !anything and everything poss Yes, in pretty much the same way that a bicycle is a car. In most countries a glider isn't defined as an aircraft. Then again, FAR103 only came about by treating certain low-end homebuilts as "non-aircraft"...

    Facet Opel

I should be driving through Taree on Thursday on my way from Ipswich to Newcastle, then Sydney-Temora-Sydney--->>---Rotorua-Wairoa. The detour to Temora is to look at property for sale near the airport.

tell me about composites to make planes from please !anything and everything possible

Re: tell me about composites to make planes from please !anything and everything poss That's why I said "aircraft structures", Bob. Yes, the Rand aircraft and a few others were around earlier, but their airframes weren't composite. Structurally they were spruce and plywood. But I was in error...

    Building an engine from scratch????

At $600 a barrel for Nikasil coating I'll stick with cast iron, thanks.

    Building an engine from scratch????

The 1835cc VW is 60hp. That's exactly my point. The designer found that the engine wasn't up to the task, and didn't ever recommend it. Not from lack of power, or overheating, but from lack of reliability. In those days even the famed Revmaster conversion was still "in development".

How do I get this Great Plains VW to start????

According to the above photo (and common sense) this isn't right.

    Building an engine from scratch????

As of 38 years ago when he was using them, nobody had yet come up with a reliable VW for aviation use. Cooling is related to cowl design, not where the engine is positioned. The VariEze was designed for an engine in the range 60-80hp, which could have included VW conversions if they had been...

Re: tell me about composites to make planes from please !anything and everything poss Burt Rutan pioneered the use of composites for aircraft structures. Read his stuff.
