The best care in aviation will not extract longevity from a flawed design.

    10/23 Raptor Video

Gets back to the foolishness of installing an engine without even a basic tear-down and inspection. That should've been easy to find.

Oh yeah. I've long lusted after Rutan's M-309; compact, ~200 HP engines. (Edit: Since I'm one of the old pharts who can remember this coming out of Rutan's barn, I remember it having IO-360's, yet anything I find online now says they were 550's. Anyone know?) I'd prefer it to the Velocity. But...

My perception of canards is they are ok for extended travel for no more than two souls who can live without short, unpaved runways. I think I would enjoy a Velocity V Twin for that purpose. For a non-professionally flown twin, that airplane makes a lot of sense with it's low vmc. Not sure you...

So if the plane catches fire he'll have longer to barbeque.

For those more knowledgeable than me, what is the likely scenario should the PSRU fail in flight? Just prop stoppage! Prop loss? If he sheds the prop and maybe a bit more hardware, will Raptor be controllable with a sudden CG shift?

I'd guess (hope, actually) he's been convinced by "investors" to throw in the towel on that Audi and go with proven propulsion. Could be why he stubbornly refuses to correct engine deficiencies (then again, that would be a wise choice, and wisdom has yet to be evident in the Raptor project) . I...

I'm of the opinion he has shelved pressurization. Too bad he didn't bite the bullet on diesels and turbos as well.

Stitch and glue (or tack and tape) airplanes?

Oh, Lordy, how I hated sanding those epoxy fillets. I guess, since the inside of a fuselage is not visible whereas the inside of a boat is MOST visible... much of that sanding can be forgone. Yet, it's a strong joint. I don't see why it couldn't work.

    Getting to Deep Space

Mods, I hope this is acceptable. I figured since we thoroughly thrashed Boeing's woes this might be worthy of discussion. From my perspective it's simple: NASA is using off-the-shelf hardware to build the SLS, yet it's years behind schedule and billions over budget. Why? Engines and boosters...

If he's successful with his"Production Plan" I'd say he's brilliant... or shrewd. Or both. "Stupid" would be investing in that plane. I don't get it.

J3 Cubs, low and slow over boat houses on the Yadkin River system. That's where girls got rid of tan lines. They always waved. Opposite end of the spectrum, Ten Commandments etched into a mountainside in western NC.
