Crashes in the News - Thread

Could be just about anytime since the introduction of the Bensen design. Lots of Bensen builders thought they could teach themselves to fly a gyro, and most of them had a similar outcome.

    Please enforce for sale/wanted rules

As stated earlier, the best solution is to use the report button if you think the post disregards the rules, and let the moderators make that judgement.

    Please enforce for sale/wanted rules

There are people who post something for sale, but have no idea what they should ask for it.

HBA First Annual Home Built Aircraft Meet

Sorry, but I’ve always had a long standing issue with the USUA. We started off in the early days teaching hang gliding, then added powered weight shifts and then three axis ultralights as they were developed. This was in Southern California, which was largely center of where hang gliding and...

What do you think is a typical configuration of an 'Air Race E' plane?

Yes, but electric propulsion is fairly straightforward and does not suffer from the myriad of failure modes that a new IC design might have. This means that you can play with the aircraft design because the propulsor is fairly well understood. Besides, many racing aircraft sport big design...

How should I lay fabric here?

Is this craft built under Part 103 where you have a maximum weight limit? Most aircraft have aluminum (or sometimes composite) cowlings around the hot engine compartment and exhaust areas. If you aren’t absolutely weight restricted, you might consider an aluminum sheet with stiffeners instead...

HBA First Annual Home Built Aircraft Meet

Or just piggyback on existing popular fly in’s like Airventure, Sun’n’Fun, etc, so that most of the organizing is already done for you. Making hotel arrangements for an HBA-only gathering is kind of pointless... sure, you can get group rates, but you have to commit to a minimum number of rooms...

What do you think is a typical configuration of an 'Air Race E' plane?

You can pretty much adapt any design. The only real difference so the small size and weight of the motor compared to an IC engine, so you don’t need the bulky engine compartment. That means that the nose can be long and slender, or you can make a pusher with the prop running in laminar air...

HBA First Annual Home Built Aircraft Meet

I was trying to think of an easy way to list members by states. If the software won’t allow a display or compilation, perhaps someone (one person only - perhaps one of the mods) can create separate sticky posts in the members only section with each post subject being the name of a state. Members...

Crashes in the News - Thread

Rapid decompression is normally very noticeable and the pilots would don masks or select lower, not continue as part of a normal flight operation without saying anything. This was either a gradual failure of the compression system, or (more likely) an incorrect selection of the pressurization...

HBA First Annual Home Built Aircraft Meet

Flabob always welcomes events like this, but it might be too far for our eastern members. Chino (museum), March AFB museum, Aircraft Spruce and even Mojave are all within easy reach of Flabob.

Dallas might be better. It is close to OKC, and there’s lots to do in Dallas, including the museum with the V-173. OKC is OK I guess (see what I did there), but as long you don’t mind being in the FAA’s back yard. Don’t want to be there when the rookie agents are practicing ramp checks...

Crashes in the News - Thread

I saw a report on this about a week ago. The story led me to believe that this was on approach to landing at night and it was one of the large festival balloons that they craft from paper and light weight plastic streamers and lift up with heat from candles.

    10/23 Raptor Video

Probably the most extreme example I’ve seen of flaps on a canard is on the Rutan Grizzly, but that is technically a three-surface craft and (IIRC) flaps were used on both the fore and aft wings.

    10/23 Raptor Video

Flaps on a canard configuration require careful design to counter pitching moments and avoid undesired stall modes. It’s not an easy thing to do.

    Another weird one

    Weird??? Henri Mignet might disagree.
