Should I put a Fuel Drain Here?

I see what you did there :-).

Should I put a Fuel Drain Here?

Send an email and we can discuss any further evaluations - don't want to clog up Bill's fuel drain question with a wholly different subject.

Kitty Hawk reveals Heaviside, its latest flying vehicle

I don't. I was involved with a design review of the plane about a year ago, but haven't heard much since. We were reviewing structure, and saw the planes and the video of the flights, but we didn't get into all the parameters of the test flights. Can't comment on that - don't know anything in...

Using only GPS as your EFIS inputs??? Why u do dat?

Just out of curiosity, because I'm not familiar with them, which EFIS's use GPS only?

    Raptor Composite Aircraft

I didn't say they were ALL great planes (in fact, really only the Varieze and Long-EZ were/are GREAT planes), but a number of the rest got built and they flew safely. And yeah, I forgot the Q1, since the plans weren't sold by RAF, but same there - a number were built, and plans were sold for all...

    Raptor Composite Aircraft

Without getting into the middle of the discussion on whether the issue is DR or SP Pitch oscillations, or both, or neither, I'll say this about the takeoff and elevator motion. Given that the plane accelerated to what should be about Vy (or higher) prior to rotation, rather than rotating well...

    Raptor Composite Aircraft

If you mean could Scaled Composites have built production aircraft, the answer is no. But that's because the company wasn't created, structured, organized or staffed to do so.

    Raptor Composite Aircraft

Not that I know of, no. But that was rarely, if ever, Burt's goal. Burt (and Scaled's) purpose was to build proof of concept aircraft for customers who were paying for them. And Scaled was VERY successful at doing that. The commercial successes were the ones that Burt designed for RAF, not...

    Raptor Composite Aircraft

Not really a fair statement. Burt was rarely (if ever) hired to put an aircraft into production - almost all of his designs were intended as Proof of Concept aircraft. Even the Starship built by Scaled was an 85% size model. So saying that downstream companies weren't able to take the prototypes...

    Raptor Composite Aircraft

While I appreciate the vote of confidence, Marc Z. (assuming you're talking about me) has long since stopped remembering enough about aircraft design and analysis to actually design or analyze an aircraft, and I don't allow people to hire me to do so, although I'm still capable of evaluating...

Using only GPS as your EFIS inputs??? Why u do dat?

Not sure what your point is here. The transponder and ADS-B altitude reporting must meet the requirements of 91.217, but that says nothing about the altimeter that the pilot uses to determine the aircraft's altitude. ALL the altimeters (static system) must be checked for IFR flight, per 91.411...

    Raptor Composite Aircraft

I vacillate on responding. SO MUCH guessing and 2nd guessing and speculation (and personal attacks on Peter - whatever his faults [and there are many], there's no reason for ad-hominem attacks and name calling [either of him or the plane itself]). Almost anything I would say has been said by...

    Swaged Studs on Control Cables.

See MIL-SPEC 51844E. It states: Nominal breaking strength. Eye splices, when properly assembled using the manufacturer’s recommended tools and splicing instructions and when pulled with increasing tension, shall hold until wire rope breaks. It is preferred that tensile loads at failure be not...

Presurization - Whats it take ?

Depends on what you mean by "homebuilder", or "solo". Burt Rutan's Catbird and Boomerang were designed for pressurization, although they've never been tested or flown pressurized. But they both were Burt's private aircraft - not kits, and only one of each was built. Clearly, they were not...

    Vortelator?

Your winnings, sir. If only "intent" was what mattered. The effect is what would matter in this case, not the intent. I could put a third red wing on a C-172 with the intent of making it look nice, but I'm pretty sure a 337 would be required... :-).

    Raptor Composite Aircraft

Been discussed here a few times - it's 3,657 lb, give or take. Since empty weight is over 3200 lb, useful load is somewhere in the 450 lb. range - basically, zero people with 3/4 fuel, or one person and maybe 40% fuel. Obviously, the plane is useless as currently designed.

Using only GPS as your EFIS inputs??? Why u do dat?

With or without. If you're flying VFR, you don't need a 91.411 static system/altimeter check. 91.411 has nothing to do with ADS-B or transponders - that's 91.413.

    Spark plug anti-sieze

Well, yeah, but at $0.285 each from ACS in batches of 100, so for $2.28 every time you yank the eight plugs, how much is your time worth? Even at the $3/hr. I pay myself when I'm working on the plane, that's hardly worth the trouble, and it SURE isn't worth it to charge customers for. YMMV :-) :-).

    Vortelator?

In Brazil that might be the case, but in the US, it depends. As an example, on canard aircraft, there are two versions of vortex generator (VG) installs - one that merely eliminates trim changes in rain with the GU canard, and another that involves putting VG's on both the canard AND the main...

    Raptor Composite Aircraft

Unlikely. He's using Beringer 6" wheels and brakes. even the LOW end of the beringers - see: https://www.beringer-aero.com/sites/beringer-aero.com/files/cata_2020_-_v9_-_17_03_2020_english_mid_def_3.pdf have a rated torque of 4900 in-lb. With two brakes, that's 9800 in-lb. With a 6.00 x 6 tire...
