2 stroke engine @ 55% or 4 stroke at 80%, which is better?

I am curious about this. Are you suggesting a 582 has a 1500 hr TBO? The one I took off my plane had a 300 hr TBO with 150 hr inspection if you went by the books. And it averaged about 4 gal/hr flying around rather leisurely.

2 stroke engine @ 55% or 4 stroke at 80%, which is better?

I believe that one of the big differences you will find between the 2 stroke and 4 stroke engines is the HP curve. The curve will be much flatter on a 4 stroke then a 2. I am switching from a 582 to a 700E which I have unfortunately not flown yet. But the 582, all two strokes really, are...

Interest in a plansbuilt, LSA/microlight amphibian?

I like it! You would have to either move the engine up on top of the wing or make prop tips that are water compatible though.

Interest in a plansbuilt, LSA/microlight amphibian?

This thread has actually had me thinking of how I would configure an amphib if I were to design it from scratch. I am thinking Buccaneer or Searey sized hull only about 1/2 to 2/3 as long after the step as before. The engine mounted to give as low of a thrust line as possible while keeping the...

Interest in a plansbuilt, LSA/microlight amphibian?

Thanks Autodidact, I just checked and found a copy for $13 bucks. For that price I don't expect it to be pretty but it will be legible. This is only my second book on boat construction compared to the baker's dozen on aircraft. Hopefully the wife doesn't freak out too much since the book will...

Interest in a plansbuilt, LSA/microlight amphibian?

As I mentioned I am not capable of designing it and have searched quite a bit trying to find more sources to learn how, but it seems it is even harder to find peoples secrets on boat building. I have seen construction photos and descriptions of foam core boat hulls being built for large racing...

    Alternative seating arrangements for two-seaters?

One thing that I always think of when I see motorcycle seating is that, much like taking a passenger on a motorcycle, it is a far more intimate experience. I have also know some people, a little more on in the years, that have trouble sitting in a straddled position like that.

Interest in a plansbuilt, LSA/microlight amphibian?

I am by no means capable of designing something like this but there are several subjects that I am very interested in that could be quite useful in a project like this. I am fascinated with mold-less composite construction and it has been used in boat building for quite some time as well as...

    Dynamic prop balancer accelerometer

Some people are safety gurus, and I could see where a post like this could look like one of those many posts we have all read where someone is trying to make a fully digital, super high tech, jet fighter, VTOL, vehicle of the future, but doing it with zero background, on a milk money budget and...

    Dynamic prop balancer accelerometer

I have been collecting parts in order to make some Arduino based accessories for my plane and a couple days a new idea popped into my head, here is the sequence of events. As I mentioned I am collecting sensors to attempt to make a glass panel for my plane. Before anyone gets upset about the...

    Retractable gear designs

If you google "Open EZ" you will find all the drawings for the Long EZ which is now considered open source. Only the nose gear is retractable but the drawings show how it works. Sorry but I can't help with any of the others.

    Airbike Composite Wing

I am equally interested to see what those that know more about composite design have to say about this. I think taking an internal structure and simply adding a stressed skin can greatly impact the structure itself. I am working my way through the books to figure it out exactly, but it does...

2 place, 4 stroke with removable or folding wings?

While not under the management of the original owner and designer, Kitfox LLC is still around. They support the older models quite well and can fabricate most of the parts for them so there is still a lot of factory support. Avid is supported by a couple aftermarket folks but for what it is...

2 place, 4 stroke with removable or folding wings?

I HIGHLY recommend you look at the Kitfox lineup! I have a KF Mod 3 that I love. If you are looking at Kolbs you have already decided you are not flying to get anywhere fast, so that is good. The 1,2,3, and 4 are relatively slow depending on engine, about 70 kt cruise is reasonable. A lot of...

    Wanted Long Ez Plans

I have long been in love with the EZ designs they just aren't very high on my list because I like wind in my face a little too much. On Marc's page for nose construction, does it seem like he will only have braking available for turning? I cannot imagine an EZ will stop any time soon if you...

Trouble with Chris Heintz design book

Heintz' book, from my understanding is supposed to be sort of a step by step how he designed the CH series. I have not gotten in to the actual meat of the book yet since the first three chapters are just a review/introduction to most of the math, science, and physics that the rest of the text...

Trouble with Chris Heintz design book

I have started reading Chris Heintz' book Flying on Your own Wings which I hoped would help me start getting a better understanding of design principles and get me back into math and science a bit since I dropped out of UCF's engineering program a few years back to join the Army. I have read...

    Shooting at airplanes.

There is a certain amount of gun fire that can be pointed at you and it is acceptable, but that is only while deployed. If I were flying around in a private plane back home and saw muzzle flashes, I am pretty sure I would be the one taken in to custody.
