    Sandwich Construction

I have a question regarding foam cores in a composite sandwich. If you micro/flox/5-min epoxy two pieces of foam and then glass over it, how much strength do you lose over a single piece. What about joining 3 pieces, etc (see pic for an explaination) ? The reason I am asking is, I was...

Last-a-Foam OK? Maybe new parts with PVC and Vacuum Infusion?

My intentions were not to re-ignite this thread into PVC vs Last-A-Foam. I am just asking that when substituting PVC (specifically Divinycells H Series) for Last-A-Foam, whether similar densities are neccesary given the similar sheer and compression strengths of both foams. Why I am...

Last-a-Foam OK? Maybe new parts with PVC and Vacuum Infusion?

Billski, What density PVC are you using? According to the data sheets for the Divinycell H series (http://www.fiberglasssupply.com/pdf/core/HManM.pdf) even the 3lb density is as strong as the 4.5lb last-a-foam in compressioin and sheer (according to Scott Watts' numbers..its hard to find data...

    Garage with 2 doors???

Wally, Haha, thats exactly what I am doing. Well, going to do I should say. Thanks for the ideas guys! Kent, I will definitely take you up on your offer when I start, I really appreciate it. Maybe catch a look at your bird(s) and a ride in your Cozy, haha :ban: Jim

    Garage with 2 doors???

I agree that simply knocking out the post would be bad. And to do it right might be kinda pricey!! I am starting to exploer the possibility of seeing if I have the room to maneuver it like Kent said. One stub wing out, then swing the nose out, and then see if I can get the other stub out. Of...

    Garage with 2 doors???

Hello everyone. I have a quick question. I am planning starting a homebuilt project. I know a two car garage is good enough, but has anyone ever built their plane in a two-door two car garage. My garage is 20x21 but has one garage door for each car. The plane I plan on building has a stub...

Thanks for the encouragement Billski! I think the $20 difference per sheet is worth the peace of mind... Jim

Last-a-Foam OK? Maybe new parts with PVC and Vacuum Infusion?

Orion, Ha. You're right. My numbers were off by a decimal point! Too early for me to be grabbing a calculator, I guess. The common-sense thing was slow to kick in also. I will be using it as core material in a sandwich, so the 5lb looks to be the winner. Thanks again! Jim

Last-a-Foam OK? Maybe new parts with PVC and Vacuum Infusion?

Orion, Thanks for the reply. I have looked at various PVC foams (Airex and Divinycell) and have not found a 4.5lb pvc foam for a last-a-foam substitute. I have found 3.75 and 5lb densities. I am pretty sure I already know you answer, but I am figuring as a direct substitue I should use the...

Last-a-Foam OK? Maybe new parts with PVC and Vacuum Infusion?

Orion, Would it be feasible to replace last-a-foam with a similar density PVC foam wherever it is used? Or would something like this require an extensive redesign of the structure? While I am far off from building yet, I am closely following the progress of Scott Watts' KR-Super2. He uses...

    Plans for sale......

Unable to get a building permit for workshop, so due to complete lack of workspace I am selling my Vision Aircraft Plans (serial #322) plus the Tricycle gear supplement. I purchased these one month ago. They have only been thumbed through and are in new condition. Along with the plans, I am...

    Space...never enough of it

Thanks Thanks for the input Billski......I have since abandoned the use of a tarp type storage shed in favor of a new 24x24 workshop. I am going to pour a slab and build it up. I have an industrial HVAC system that has been laying around I will put in (my father picked this up years ago before...

    Space...never enough of it

I am very limited in building space. I have a two car garage, but unfortunately I had long ago turned one half into another room. I am planning on building a composite. I was thinking about making my remaining garage area my "clean" room. But for the dirty work, I was thinking about using a...

    Decisions decisions

Rob, the falco is a very sexy airplane. I would certainly like to build one. However the cost would probably spiral out of control if I decided to build one. Heck, any planes cost is going to spiral out of control, but with any luck I can get out of that spin before I finish. Also I am a...
