Why is poplar not so popular?

poplar is not rot resistant but is quit stable, it is a soft hardwood and is good for drawer sides and bottoms

    West system VS. everything else

The west system with the EXTRA SLOW hardener is approved by burt and nat, but as it only has a TG of 129 F, i prefer mgs, also approved

    Dow foam question

Perfect timing I'm a cozy builder and have cut 3 planes worth of wings and 4 of vert stabs. i was just doing research on the extruded polystyrene and found that the foam specced for the rutan planes is "pipe insulation" by dow chemical. It comes in 108 inch lengths. I could not find it...

    Glass Types

The cozygirls have come up with a cheap low Vacuum method, might want to look into it

    Carbon Wing

i see it is hollow - wouldn't it be allot stronger with a foam core?

    Carbon Shortage

i think ambient should be at least 70 and keep the epoxy heated to about 95 and then turn off heat and use small heater to keep tented parts warm

    Carbon Shortage

no core material for the cowl that i know of - maybe some hard points? the cores that are being talked about are for ribs and other stuffff. BTW - leave the cowl on the mold at elevated temps for a week, i mean 90 or so degrees. let cool to room temp and then remove. it will stay...

    Carbon Shortage

ok i understand using glass as a core and carbon fiber as a skin. sorry falco and aviatrix - don't like wood in airplanes. balsa cores can rot and no way to inspect, but the falco IS a work of art and beauty - nice and fast too on the ribs - they are all structural, but they just don't...

    Carbon Wing

Nice work - i can't even see the spar cap change under the carbon fiber

    Carbon Shortage

the carbon is the stiffest material and will take ALL of the loads, the glass will just be there for the ride

    Carbon Wing

looks great - are the layers staggered to taper the strength, center out - is it your design?
  13. D

    Carbon Shortage

from everything i have read - this is a bad idea, the carbon would take all the load - i would interleave them like aero composites does on their props temp - for epoxy is important, but solvable. heat workspace during work hours, store epoxy in light bulb heated box, tent layup to heat...

    Carbon Shortage

BTW - thanks for the heads up as i am going to need a little soon to make my Intake Manifold and will get it sooner rather than later

    Carbon Shortage

ok, assume - a while back AS&S was short on chrome moly tube, did not know when they were going to get it. i went down to my local chrome moly/aluminum/SS aircraft alloy warehouse and they had everything in stock, by the mile. SOOOOOOOOOO, i just figured this was the same thing. Oh the guy...

    Carbon Shortage

have you tried other suppliers, i would guess there is no shortage, just that AS&S probably does not sell much and does not like to keep it in stock
