Should we have kit manufacture subforums?

I see no downside to starting a different "Category" and then welcoming any group that would like to come on board. It should be Kit or Plansbuilt though. With the demise of Yahoo groups, an inquiry to many of these groups might be a great option to them. Really well established groups like...

Tube construction: Alternatives to conventional welding

After reading all of this, my personal conclusions are these. Others may reach different conclusions. 1. Using square tubing offers advantages in ease of cutting and matching joint intersections. 2. Using alternative methods of joining the square tubing is much more time consuming and costly...

Gear Box Failure @ 43 Hours

If anyone is interested........Bought a new SUV earlier this year and it has more wizzbang gizmos than I can keep up with. Anyway, "Entune" popped up on the screen yesterday and wanted me to enable it. This morning I got an email telling me the condition of the vehicle. It told me the "oil...

Building more crash-worthy composite planes and cockpits

( If the OP feels that the information I have posted is not helpful or of any interest to him, he needs to PM me and I will gladly respect his wishes. I don't think its your place to decide what may/may not be useful to him or other builders.) Exerpts from " Small Airplane Crashworthiness...

Building more crash-worthy composite planes and cockpits

Basic Principles of Crashworthiness (https://pdfs.semanticscholar.org/225b/4ff4b954467a26708eb596c3cdbcd304b5db.pdf) Crashworthiness can be defined as the ability of an aircraft and its internal systems and components to protect occupants from injury in the event of a crash. I interpret that...

Gear Box Failure @ 43 Hours

Every time the subject of reduction drives comes up, we seem to gravitate to the same "circular" path of thought. First is that the reduction drive will allow the engine to provide more power. Then we move to the problems associated with the fact that "torsional resonance" now becomes a more...

Gear Box Failure @ 43 Hours

I think most of the problem with redrive failure relates to the steel parts failing rather than the non-ferrous metals of the case or possibly a shell bearing. You are correct though that if the failure were other than the steel drive components it would not give any indication other than...

Are the engines being used with reduction drives ?

Building more crash-worthy composite planes and cockpits

For some reason you don't seem to take exception to numerous mentions of using tubing, only to my suggestions that the most effective way to make a cockpit survivable is to find ways to reduce speed for landing and or impact . Thats what he is asking for, suggestions about making the cockpit...

Gear Box Failure @ 43 Hours

I agree that the two primary things should be a sight glass and a temperature indicator. I think it would also be easy to install an oil level light. As far as metal chips, I would install a simple oil dip stick with a magnet on it, or a magnetised dipstick. Check it before and after every flight.

Building more crash-worthy composite planes and cockpits

I didn't say they should be exclusive,in fact I said : Auto manufacturers have learned that removing the energy contained in the vehicle and in the passenger prior to any impact is just as important as protection after an impact. They have technology in hand to help slow or stop a vehicle...

Do you have any pictures of the destroyed coupling/shaft ? Do you think something like an ATI or a Fluid damper would have prevented the problem ?

    Shoulder wing unpopularity

Well, its kinda unique. The more you look at it the more things there are to like about it, but it looks kinda complicated to build something like that. Is that stabilator balance wt adjustable? I like the spoilers but wonder about the placement of the flaperons.Top of the instrument panel looks...

Building more crash-worthy composite planes and cockpits

Agree with most of what you said, but personally I would never build or use a tank that has anything in it or in its construction that could ever begin to disolve. Fuel is an ever evolving mixture of variations. What works well today may be replaced tommorrow with something that isn't compatible...

Gear Box Failure @ 43 Hours

The post above by Andreas is a perfect example of the mystery of using a reduction gear. The reduction gear had a good reputation on the designers personal airplane. Everything was fine....until it wasn't. Now, though he seems to prefer the LS engine, he has soured on the set up and gone back to...

Gear Box Failure @ 43 Hours

Here are 3 and there are a lot more. You need to get out more and maybe read some old issues of Contact magazine.....maybe even buy the books they offered if they are still available. I think you might find it enlightening to see pictures of the Belted Air Power conversions.....they already...

Gear Box Failure @ 43 Hours

(Note: I saw nothing on the website to verify these statements) The airplane is sold as a 3/4 scale of the original. If thats correct, the fuselage and wings and tail would be the same size no matter what engine is installed in it. I think the original version was powered by a Rotax and had...

Gear Box Failure @ 43 Hours

I guess it depends on each persons definition of light and simple. We sit here analyzing the failure of a reduction drive and the resultant mystery of exactly why it happened. I think that reduction drives bring difficult challenges even though basic construction is pretty straightforward. The...
