Re: What did you do on your airplane project today?

Lots of composite work. Made a few plugs including this one for the augmentor tube inlet belmouth. Made from blocks of wood and Bondo. The aluminum piece is my custom formed trowel which will...

Re: RV-6 composite cowl repair materials

How big is the section of core that needs replacement?

If not too big, I'd consider attacking the inside first. Blend a "crater" as deep as required to not break through the OML, fill with really...

    Re: High Temp Resin Recommendations

Got the other half off the plug and clamped together for a trial fit.

Just to be clear, the pipes will be brought together in operation. Working on the plug...

    Re: High Temp Resin Recommendations

Jon hasn't been around these parts for years now. Last I heard he was out of aviation to care for family out of state.

I have one half of the duct curing with RT epoxy now. I'm going to try it...

    Re: High Temp Resin Recommendations

My original plan was two metal pipes of 4" diameter. I might still go that way if the right material drops in my lap, but the I still need to spin a pair of inlet tulips. By the time I do that I...
  7. Re: Oil pan for O-320/360 equivalent without any air induction?

Here is the one I made. Still have to finish welding, but you get the idea:

  8. Re: Oil pan for O-320/360 equivalent without any air induction?

You could also make one pretty easily. I drew up the pan rail in CAD and had one cut out of 6061 plate with a water jet. Simple matter to add the sides, bottom and oil pickup.

Re: Crashes in the News - Thread

Saw the news live. Headlines were pure hyperbole of course, but Trump implied that it was the FAA driving the boat. He just happened to agree with it.

    Re: High Temp Resin Recommendations

I've measured components after a good heat soak and even at the top of the engine I didn't see much more than 200f. Not bad.

Re: Crashes in the News - Thread

It's the FAA making the call. The Trump angle is more headline hyperbole.

    Re: Cantilever parasol wings?

Fair enough, all. I overlooked this was in the "hangar" (aka Facebook) area. No technical solution required/desired.

    High Temp Resin Recommendations

I'm considering fabrication of an exhaust augmented duct for the cowl on the Rocket. It will be a single, flattened oval approximately 4hx8wx18l. This duct will handle all of the cooling exit air so...

    Re: Cantilever parasol wings?

Yes, the math was tongue in cheek, but the point remains that there are endless threads concerning the "cheap/easy" airplane and that means a LOT of time burned up bashing keys instead of...

    Re: Cantilever parasol wings?

Just an observation here, but if some of you guys paid yourself a dime every time you participated in a "cheap and easy airplane" thread you could be flying an "expensive and complex" one by now.

    Re: Delta wing airfoil

Considering what passed for an "airfoil" on the F104 and the F117 (and the Hiperbipe, for that matter), I'll bet you won't suffer that much with this concept.

Re: Thoughts on a new biplane design?

Even if through some kind of alternate reality you manage to build a 2 place airplane "substantially" lighter than a Cub (good luck), you still have the high drag Biplane configuration to deal with. ...
  19. Re: Integrated aerobatic fuel tank with exotic engine

Why is BOTH bad on a low wing?

Re: Thoughts on a new biplane design?

There is a reason the pickings are slim. A 2 place Biplane with 80 HP is going to be a dog with a capital "D".

Re: Thoughts on a new biplane design?

  23. Re: Integrated aerobatic fuel tank with exotic engine

Didn't realize this thread was a comprehensive design of your fuel system. My offering of the L- 39 solution was not in that context - rather - it was to suggest a component (an accumulator) between...
  24. Re: Folding wings without disconnecting controls?

There was a version of the Nesmith Cougar with folding wings. IIRC, it did not disconnect the flaps/ailerons when folded.
