Yo, f1r57 p057!

I am somewhat interested in planning to design and build an aircraft (and sell the plans if it works ;-)) with the size and specifications of a colomban cri-cri. I have a sort of scientific background, but I don't really know anything about what's used in the real world. I know big 747s have jets and know how those jets work, but I don't have any idea about the models. I know cars run with engines and can explain how those engines work, but I don't even know the latest Volvo model. Just to give you an idea.
Now, my question is the following: when using a normal bike or kart engine, I'm reading a lot about people who're saying "it's great for an airplane, once you've converted it". So what is this "converting" all about? Is it all about installing a PSRU or something? What steps are there between buying a non-plane-orientated engine and starting it once it's installed in an aircraft?

Thanks,
tulcod.
