I'd like some opinions...

I may have a good opportunity to buy a hanger home on a grass strip in the very near future. I am not a pilot yet, but I am thinking of building the plane of choice prior to taking lessons. Why pay for someone else's plane (or club) to learn. I'd rather learn in my own.

The biggest drawback I see is having to pay someone else to test fly my plane to the point they can have passengers. Would this cost more than taking lessons in a club plane? I may get a test pilot anyway, at least for the first several hours.

Why do people (mostly non-pilots) say I'm crazy? Is there something I'm missing?
