    Air driven generator?

slightly off on a tangent, but referring to the turbocharger type of wheel and generator: Garret also makes electric assisted turbos (that use a DC motor to reduce lag). These are connected to the cold side, and can serve as a generator when not busy motoring. 12v and IIRC 48VDC.

    Angular Velocity/Acceleration

Geez, never thought of myself as a Billski Troll, but I guess in light of his background and my interests, that's what I have become.

    V12 Alternatives

In that power range, the front runner is Walter, but you need to do a LOT of looking around to find a good used engine. One of my good friends built an 8 place bush plane using a 601D (at around 900HP) and matching Avia propeller (search posts by Craftsven). Once GE sunk their greedy teeth...

    Angular Velocity/Acceleration

I am a bit hesitant to start any thread right now, as rumour has it I might be called out on my Covid shutdown for an international job - that means a lot of long days in travel and work - but I suspect this one might survive long enough with or without me. I have been fixing and building...

What Did You Do To Save General Aviation Today?

Even with the Wuhan Virus running wild, training in Western Canada is saturated mostly with foreign students, and it is pretty hard to get an instructor and insurance on anything that doesn't look like a 150. A Da20 is way out of his price range and there wasn't a good AA-1 offered for some...

What Did You Do To Save General Aviation Today?

My meager contribution of trying to get a good friend who no longer flies sailplanes to get a PPL came home with a big bang. His vision was building and flying an RV6 and I have tried to tell him that the way to start is WITH certified airplanes. Got him into a Citabria 2 years ago for about 5...

    Health Wealth & Happiness

My mentor from the downstream side of the oil business is also my skiing buddy. He turned 98 this spring, but sadly is starting to slow down a bit - but only a wee bit. He always explains to me that he intends to die at the hands of a jealous husband...and is doing his best to make that...

    Health Wealth & Happiness

Yeah, the gymn thing makes me laugh as well. My wife and eldest daughter go several times a week, but it is more of an event for them to do together and take a break from 4 very demanding little boys. There is more than enough work around house, shop and farm to keep me and anyone else who...

    Engine cost

Wera and Wiha for the screwdrivers, but if you are touching cross points on Asian anything, you need JIS drivers and bits which Vessel is the top source. Knipex for pliers, but if you want the very best needle nose you need Oribis (also made in Germany). They are all still out there, just no...

    Engine cost

Sadly, since most Crap-on tools ( I can say that...as I have a number of them) now come from the same place as HF, you are quite right....for North America. Once can still get really good tools from Yurp. For nearly 50 years, my flat wrenches have been mostly Stahwille, lately all of my...

Want a real thrill? Price out a DIESEL outboard for your saltwater pleasure. About double the price of a gasser.

    Engine cost

Pretty much the same story for 50 year old certified airplanes (especially two place) as well.

    Engine cost

If that was the main consideration, why would Cessna be producing 172, 182, 206 today? 40 years ago, I was able to buy 450HP for $11,000.00 of fully certified and very useful shiny new aircraft engines. I would LOVE to be able to do that now, but harsh reality is we don't do wars that run on...

    Engine cost

It is not so much that aviation as a practice has greater liability, it is that the lawyers and insurers see aviation as a sacred cow they can milk for anything they want. In the days before the TINY tort reforms of '90ish the end of Cessna piston engine production came because more than half...

    Engine cost

There are more than a few "catch 22"s involved in making aircraft engines. IF you are a small company, the profit from the hand labour to rebuild (or build) an engine may seem expensive to one of we typical tightwad little airplane people, but the prices we are seeing are NOT much different...
