No one can explain WHY planes fly...

The turbines work for the sun! It's a conspiracy!! Apparently Boeing Max airplanes are so densely designed that they mutually attract to the Earth. Similar to the helicopter, which being so horribly complex, is abhorred by mother nature and is repelled by the Earth. So...yes. I believe you are...

No one can explain WHY planes fly...

Had to add a clarification here. The Wind turbines don't "add heat" they simply remove energy from the air as it flows past. In doing so there are viscous losses which manifest as local "heat". This simply concentrates the loss/entropy in a particular location. Otherwise it would be spread over...

No one can explain WHY planes fly...

I should point out that I'm picking on engineers a bit here, mostly in jest. While we (I are one) may be ignorant of all the details; the bros Wright constructed a flying contraption while the physicists argued about how it was impossible. Including the likes of Lord Kelvin-the true father of...

EXACTLY!!! It's not a continuum! and there is no computer big enough to get a solution to the granularity required. And when you did.....statistical thermo and quantum mechanics would be needed....and guess what...every solution would be different!!! SHHHHH!! You're going to upset the church of...

It's definitely a "how many angels can dance on the head of a pin" type thing as far as we are concerned.....but among Aero types (especially undergrads and 2nd year grad students who do nothing but play with databases, airfoils and panel codes)....you can start bar fights with this stuff. They...

How much money do you have on you at any given time? Or is this a "that's what she said" joke??:D

I'm glad someone got something out of it. I read a couple of posts at the end of the "Lift and Conservation of Energy" thread just now that happened after I forced myself to never look at it again. There was comment about Ilan Kroo saying the wing uses a change in inertia of the lift medium to...

Look up the thread "Lift and Conservation of energy" if you really must know more about this topic. I just re-read it and stand by most of what I said. The stuff I would quibble over would require more space and energy than any of us have.

M DV/DT DKE/DT DPE/DT DU/DT=alpha Del^2U Navier-Stokes Viscosity Heat Entropy Everything else is an obsolete math model that relies on crap assumptions. Navier-Stokes is the only approach that starts from first principles. Problem is there is no known closed form solution to the equations. A...

    Timeless tale... cutting aluminum

Plasma can work, but the heat affected zone can cause problems. Can also be fiddly to get the kerf to behave. Best to use CNC plasma if you are going to try. One mistake people make all the time is thinking using CNC will save time. It won't. Unless you use the machine, and cad all day every...

    2SI 690 use it?

I have a good friend that flies a PPC with a 2SI motor. He swears by them and has been using them for at least 20 years. Lower output, but reliable. Parts are still available, and they are easy to rebuild. I'd go through it, break it in properly and run with it. Make sure you understand how to...

    Builder’s anxiety

Test it out on the ground first. Do several run-ups. Then take off with all the runway in front of you. Climb at VY...get up fast and stay in close. Do a few T&Gs...Land...Check for leaks and if all looks good, proceed. Check again when you do your next pre-flight. I always double check the...

    Builder’s anxiety

See: bathtub curve. It's a well known failure pattern that applies to most things mechanical. Infant mortality due to improper materials, defects, or assembly problems all show up in the first few hours of operation. Once you get through this period the likelihood of failure decreases to a...

    Builder’s anxiety

For me, new engine anxiety is the worst. If it's gonna fail, it will do so in the first 100 hrs or so. After that I don't worry too much. But every single burble, tick and squeak causes sphincter spasm for that first 100 hrs.
